GOSPORT BOROUGH 0

WEYMOUTH 3

WEYMOUTH bounced back from three defeats to clinch their first away win of the season in style – and shoot three places up the league table.

The Terras dominated from start to finish and fully deserved victory that lifted them off the foot of the Beazer Homes Premier Division.

Gosport, who are also in the relegation zone, went close in the eighth minute

Two minutes later, however, the Terras took the lead. A long through ball down the middle from Paul Harrison caught the home defence off guard, leaving Kevin Smith in the clear to drill the loose ball wide of Gosport goalkeeper Tony Stares.

Although the Gosport attack created the occasional threat, it was Weymouth who continued to look the more dangerous in front of goal.

And on the half hour they had a great chance to increase their lead. From just outside the penalty area Sean Docherty laid on a stunning pass between two Gosport defenders to Graham Withey, who blasted his shot wide.

However, five minutes before the interval the Terras went 2-0 up.

The goal owed a lot to the perseverance of Tony Pounder who latched on to a loose ball to beat one challenge and then quickly accelerate past home defender Shaun North to race to the bye-line and centre to the unmarked Kevin Smith who had no trouble in turning the ball into the unguarded net for his second goal.

Speedy

Then, seconds into the second half Weymouth should have scored again. Once again the speed of Tony Pounder caused the Gosport defence no end of problems as he cut into their penalty area only to blast the eventual shot high over the bar.

Meanwhile Withey was also having no luck in front of goal, and in the 53rd minute be should have done better with a clear header.

The opening was created by an inch-perfect centre from Docherty which left the Wemouth striker clear at the far post only to head wide.

The Gosport attack made very little progress, and when in the 64th minute striker David Walters was put clear from a fortunate rebound, his pass only found a Weymouth defender.

Two minutes later Withey went close for Weymouth when a lovely ball to the near post was headed wide by the striker.

However, the Terras rounded off a fine victory 11 minutes from time with a third goal from the penalty spot.

A neat turn just inside the area by Kevin Smith was brought to an abrupt end by a trip from Gosportn substitute Gavin Barclay, and Richard Cooper had no difficulty converting the spot kick.
