WEYMOUTH director of football Paul Maitland has called for collective unity between supporters ahead of the Terras’ all-important final league clash of the season at home to Farnborough in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South today (3pm).
Beat Farnborough and the league title belongs to the Terras. Lose or draw and Weymouth have to hope Taunton Town do not take three points in their clash away at relegation-threatened Basingstoke Town.
When asked what he wants to see against Farnborough, Maitland replied: “What I want to see more of, above anything else, is a collective unity between supporters.
“Whether that is the die-hard home and away fans or the occasional fan I want to see unity among the fans from minute one to minute 90, regardless of what is happening on the pitch, to come out and support their club and support the players that have put them in the position that they are in.
“From the players I just want to see that they do themselves justice and play the way that they can play, the way that they have played for the majority of the season.
“League campaigns are long and arduous and difficult at times and it is about how you ride out the tough moments and how you respond in the difficult moments that sets you aside from the rest and nothing has changed going into this weekend.”
In a sign of how strong the league was last season, a win today will still see the Terras finish 11 points shy of the 97 points they notched last season, albeit with four less league games in the year.
Terras’ assistant boss Tom Prodomo feels that it represents all of the hard work that has gone in over the last two years, and feels that there is a connection between the players and the fans again.
Prodomo said: “I think really (today) it just represents all the hard work that has gone in over the last two years.
“I think across that time since the manager came into the football club we have benefitted from some really good crowds and I think there is definitely a connection between the players and the fans again.
“I think it is just another great example of that, and another step forward for this football club.”
For today’s kick-off, the club will be strictly keeping the start at 3pm, with it being the last game of the season.
As a result, the club ask that people come as early as possible, with entry to the club and bar from 1pm. The club ask for correct change to be brought for purchasing tickets.
