Weymouth set up Dorchester final as Verwood thrashed

WEYMOUTH 5

Suraci 31, 61, Wakefield 40, Williams 43, Medway 75

VERWOOD TOWN 0

WEYMOUTH brushed aside the challenge of Verwood on a bitterly cold night to set up a Dorset Senior Cup final with neighbours Dorchester Town.

Five goals in 44 minutes sealed the victory as the Terras rattled in 24 attempts on goal against the Wessex League’s second-tier minnows who failed to muster a single attempt of their own.

As expected, boss Mark Molesley rang the changes with several key players rested from Saturday’s 2-1 win at Concord Rangers.

Ashley Wells was handed a rare start and the captain’s armband to boot in a strong side despite all those changes.

Predictably, the hosts bossed the entire first period as they camped in the Verwood half but they were guilty of profligacy in front of goal, scoring just twice from 15 attempts at goal.

That opening goal did not arrive until just past the half-hour, virtually out of the blue, when the impressive Pat Suraci fired home a polished strike from the left corner of the box.

Josh Wakefield slotted home in the 40th minute and the Terras made the scoreline a little more realistic with a third two minutes ahead of half-time.

Brett Williams atoned for a series of earlier misses with a magnificent 35-yarder that beat keeper Dale Hind all ends up.

The home domination continued after the break and there was a noticeable improvement from the Terras’ strikeforce with all nine attempts finding the target; but there was only two more goals.

Tom Whelan nearly caught Hind out with a speculative long-ranger that the keeper gathered at the second attempt on the hour.

Seconds later it was 4-0 when Suraci showed great tenacity to hold off Josh Hall before turning and drilling home low from the edge of the box.

Then substitute Charlie Medway displayed admirable composure to slot home a fifth from a tight angle in the 75th minute.

And, five minutes later, Suraci was only denied a deserved treble when his low drive was well blocked out by Hind.

Even Medway could have claimed a brace when, in the last action of the night, his shot looked destined for the bottom corner until an outstretched leg diverted it behind.

Weymouth’s win confirms a mouthwatering final against Dorchester on Tuesday, March 3 with a venue set to be confirmed today by the Dorset FA.
