Match Preview: Wealdstone v Weymouth – Saturday 12th March 2022 – 15:00

David Oldfield’s side travel east to Ruislip to face Wealdstone in the Vanarama National League

THE TERRAS

It was a disappointing night on Tuesday in Greater Manchester as the Terras faced Altrincham at the J.Davidson Stadium. A five nil defeat meant that Weymouth failed to make ground in the fight for survival and will be looking to immediately bounce back this afternoon in order to close the gap between relegation and another season in the Vanarama National League. David Oldfield will be rallying his troops for what will be yet another tough afternoon, but will be hoping the team delivers the type of performance that we saw against some of the stronger teams a few weeks ago.

The gaffer on today’s clash with Wealdstone:

“Wealdstone are a good side and we know we have to rise to the big challenge. We need to make sure we retain our work ethic and collective spirit for the task ahead. Once again we know the importance of the game and we need to find a way to come through with a positive outcome.

This is only achieved with the work and team effort. We have to use the experience during the week to drive us forward and make sure we give our amazing supporters something to cheer.”

THE STONES

Wealdstone have picked up seven points in their previous six games with wins over Maidenhead United last time out, courtesy of Jack Cook and Rhys Browne’s goals, and a 3-1 win over Barnet last month. Wealdstone also picked up a draw against Torquay United, but fell to defeats against Eastleigh, Wrexham and Solihull Moors. Wealdstone’s home record is currently five wins, five draws and five defeats at Grosvenor Vale, including a home win against Notts County. The Stones haven’t had great success in the cups this year as they fell to defeat against Needham Market in the FA Trophy plus failed to reach the First Round of the FA Cup, losing to Dagenham and Redbridge. However, the Stones sit 16th in the league and thirteen points from safety, and another win this afternoon would further aid their hopes of survival.

Player To Watch: Josh Umerah

With ten goals so far in the league this season, the 25 year old, who joined the Stones from Torquay United last summer, will be hoping to increase his goal tally as Wealdstone’s top scorer, but also to break his current goalless drought of five games, having not scored since their win against Barnet last month.

@TerraStatman’s Facts Of The Match

One of our more regular foes over the years, this will be our 45th meeting against “The Stones”. Perhaps a good omen is that we have scored in the last eight of these matches!

As Conference South champions in 2020, we have had the pleasure of facing them in each of our last three seasons although only once in our joint promotion campaign due to the season being truncated by the pandemic, a barnstorming 3-4 loss at the Bob Lucas. Since that time we faced a narrow defeat in London last season before a 4-0 win at home. In this campaign we could only manage a 1-1 draw in Dorset.

In recent times Ben Thomson has enjoyed scoring twice against the Londoners, as has Sean Shields. The other goalscoring feat of note was in the 2020/21 home win when Brennan Camp notched his only goal for the club.

Only two current players have featured for both teams. Terra Taofiq Olomowewe is currently on loan at Dulwich Hamlet and Stones midfielder Matt Buse played four times for Weymouth on loan from Yeovil as an 18 year old in 2015/16.

We have lost seven and drawn just one of our last eight games against teams from the capital (including the friendly v Chelsea) but clearly London born Sean Shields relishes playing against teams from his home city as he has recorded six of our last nine assists against M25-encircled clubs.
