BARNET 2

Richards-Everton 34, Adeloye 78

Report: Alfie Lumb

Barnet put 2 goals past a sluggish Weymouth at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Monday afternoon.

The Terras were moving the ball around well in the early stages but it was the visitors who had the first chance. Barnet were playing the ball to the wing and delivered a cross which was cleared away but hit on the volley by Sam Skeffington from range. The powerful strike was parried away by Ethan Ross and the danger was clear.

There was little in the way of chances for Weymouth in the opening 23 minutes, with the Bees keeping possession well. Ephron Mason-Clark had space in the centre of the park and attempted a driven shot from range but it was straight into the gloves of Ethan Ross.

Just a minute later, Mason-Clark was in again. The winger came into the box from the left and lost his marker to fire a shot at Ross’ near post. The Terras keeper was alert to the danger and palmed the strike over the bar for a corner, which was collected by Ross.

In the 34th minute, the visitors made their dominance count as they took the lead following a set-piece. The ball came into the area from the left and dropped to Lee Vaughn who scuffed his shot, taken with his left foot. Ben Richards-Everton was positioned well to turn the ball goal bound beyond the rooted Ross.

The Terras had their first real attempt almost immediately after. Cameron Murray guided a header from a long ball down to an oncoming Calvin Brooks in the penalty area. Brooks took the effort on the volley with his right boot but the wind carried it way wide of Adam Parkes’ goal.

This gave Weymouth more confidence in the game and put pressure on the defenders when Jack Dickson’s low cross from the byline found Andy Dallas. The Terras striker had his back to goal and turned to shoot but the shot was blocked before a Bees defender saw the danger away.

After the half time break it was still Barnet who were looking the liveliest. A long ball on the ground saw the play break to Tomi Adeloye. The Bees striker was through on goal but rushed his strike, with Ross collecting the ball easily.

Dallas was looking sharp on the left. The striker collected the ball from Josh McQuoid and travelled into the area, weaving his way through 2 defenders on the byline but could not pick out a Terras attacker. The chance was lost as Parkes made the save.

The game was turned on its head in the 55th minute as Barnet went down to 10 men. Anthony Wordsworth was adjudged to have endangered Ollie Harfield with a challenge, despite pulling out early and received a straight red card from referee Lloyd Wood.

The Terras almost made the extra man count 11 minutes later. Harfield whipped in a cross from the left that bounced beyond the reach of Dallas but was met by a diving Calvin Brooks. The Terras right back delivered a goal bound header at the back post but Parkes was there to meet and deny the chance, pushing the ball away to his right.

Barnet doubled their lead in the 79th minute. A cleared corner allowed Tomi Adeloye to take the ball from his half and drive into an unmanned Weymouth half. Terras defenders could not catch the Bees striker up and when in the area, he cooly slotted it through the legs of Ross.

Weymouth were downhearted by the goal and their wayward and loose passes gave the Bees motive to attack again. This time, Mason-Clark collected the ball and weaved his way through players in the midfield before striking a shot with his right boot. The ball whistled wide of Ross’ left post, and the attack was ended.

Brooks had a guilt-edged chance to put the Terras back into the game in the 85th minute. A short corner came to Shields who dug a cross out to the back post from the left. The ball evaded all except for Brooks who nodded the ball wide at the back post despite being unmarked.

Five minutes of added time were not enough for the Terras to form another attack, with Barnet taking 3 points back to London, winning 2-0.
