Weymouth Football Club are delighted to have accepted an invitation to play Premier League side Chelsea FC in a pre-season friendly on Sunday 15th August.
The friendly against the current Champions League holders will take place behind closed doors at their world-class training facility at Cobham in Surrey.
Thomas Tuchel’s men face Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup on 11th August, before opening their Premier League campaign at home to Crystal Palace on 14th August. With the Blues being well represented at the Euros, Weymouth will provide a pre-season test for Chelsea players returning to fitness.
The Terras last faced Chelsea in a mid-season friendly in December 1979, 5,022 fans saw two goals from Iannone leading Weymouth to a 2-1 victory at the Rec in Weymouth.
On the friendly, Weymouth manager Brian Stock said, “I was contacted by Carlo Cudicini (loans manager) regarding a potential fixture on a weekend we were struggling for a fixture.
“Given the fact our league starts later than any other league trying to find a fixture was proving difficult.
“We were delighted to accept the invitation against regular senior first-team players and give our squad of players that vital tough test leading into our first league game of the season.”
Weymouth’s National League season starts on Saturday 21st August when Boreham Wood visit the Bob Lucas Stadium.
