BOREHAM WOOD 2

Report: Alfie Lumb

Weymouth fell to defeat on their first game of the season, losing 2-0 to London side Boreham Wood at the Bob Lucas Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Terras were pressing for a chance in the opening minutes, however the visitors had the best chance at an early goal on the counter attack. A low cross from the left fell to the feet of Tyrone Marsh but his shot gave Terras defenders little to worry about, the tame effort deflecting out for a corner.

The Wood took the lead in the 9th minute when Kane Smith was closest to a Terras’ cleared ball, hitting it from over 25 yards out first time to rocket the shot through a crowded defence and past Ross Fitzsimons outstretched left hand.

Marsh was through again on the 20 minute mark, with another long ball, this time through the centre of the pitch. The striker found himself one on one with Fitzsimons but the keeper was able to get down well to parry the shot away with his left foot.

Omar Mussa had the Terras’ first shot on target in the 34th minute. Bradley Ash was taken down by Wood captain Mark Ricketts and a free kick was awarded. Mussa stepped up to take the effort but it was straight at goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore, who could collect with both hands.

Calvin Brooks took matters into his own hands just 2 minutes later. The right back took the ball on just inside the opposition hall and carried it past a number of defenders to the byline but could only win a corner.

The Terras were looking nervy and gave possession away in midfield. Josh Rees pounced on the ball, and steamed down the right side before driving a low shot in the area. Fitzsimons did well to get down low to his right side and make the save.

The Wood doubled their lead after 40 minutes. A long ball over the top from midfield found Marsh who was onside. Fitzsimons had come off his line, giving Boreham Wood’s number 10 the opportunity to fashion a chance, dinking the ball over the keeper.

53 minutes in and Weymouth thought they had their best chance. Following the interval the Terras were working the ball around well on the left, with Shields playing in Ollie Harfield. The left back returned the pass to Shields on the byline who took a shot on from a tight angle. Ashmore jumped on the ball to protect a second chance, however the linesman had put up the flag for offside.

The Wood were making simple passes to get in behind and were close to a third in the 56th minute. The ball was worked out wide to Kane Smith who floated in a cross from the right. Marsh’s open header, glancing just wide of Fitzsimons’ right post.

Four minutes later, just after the introduction of Ahkeem Rose for Omar Mussa, the Terras were pressing hard. A dragged shot from Robinson outside the area deflected into the path of Bradley Ash. The striker seemed to lose his footing but the chance was kept alive from a poor clearance, however the Terras could make nothing from the chance.

The game was end-to-end, this time Boreham Wood had the next chance. A set piece from the away side was floated In by Jacob Mendy towards Will Evans. The centre back rose highest in an attempt to square the ball across the box to Scott Boden but Fitzsimons read the danger well and caught the ball, denying the goal.

The visitors would feel unlucky they didn’t add to their tally in the 84th minute. A set piece from the left wing, taken by Mendy was put into the area. Fitzsimons came out to meet the ball but Boden rose early to beat the keeper, however skimming the top of the crossbar.

With 2 minutes to go, Weymouth were pressing hard and almost found a way back into the game. Rose came in from the right and laid the ball off to Tom Bearwish with one touch. The substitute took the ball on before striking from distance, forcing Ashmore to scramble across the goal to parry the shot away to his right.

Five minutes were added for extra time at the end of the game to make up for the stoppages in play from the opposition team, but it was not enough for the Terras.
