Yeovil win 2-1 on penalties

Report: Alfie Lumb

A tight FA Cup replay came down to penalties at the Bob Lucas Stadium, with derby rivals Yeovil edging the game through the shootout.

Brian Stock’s side earned a replay when Tom Bearwish popped up to equalise in the 95th minute on Saturday after the Glovers went a goal up early on.

The visitors were the first to dig out a shot in the third minute when Jordan Barnett struck from range as the Terras struggled to clear their lines. The shot, however, went well wide of Ross Fitzsimons right post.

The Terras thought they were in for a chance of their own in the 12th minute when Omar Mussa found space to float a ball into Bradley Ash. However the Terras striker was adjudged to have handled the ball in trying to control it, with the linesman flagging for a Yeovil free kick.

It took just 15 minutes for the first yellow card of the contest when Barnett performed a late challenge on Bearwish after the whistle had gone for a free kick.

The side from Somerset took the lead against the run of play in the 20th minute from a counter attack. Sunny Blu Lo-Everton played the ball through to Charlie Wakefield on the left. The midfielder took a shot from a tight angle which Fitzsimons had to parry, but only as far as Joe Quigley. The number 10 had time to pick out his effort but it had smacked against the upright. The ball came back out to a Yeovil player who swept in a low cross which was eventually turned on target by Matthew Worthington.

Yeovil had their tails up and were trying to double their advantage, this time it was Dale Gorman who took on a strike but the ball blazed over the bar.

Gorman had another chance on the half hour mark after dispossessing Omar Mussa. The midfielder carried the ball into the final third before taking on a driven shot from range which Fitzsimons was relieved to get behind to make the save.

Weymouth had the chance on the brink of half time when they were awarded a corner. Sean Shields whipped the ball in from the near side, with Tyler Cordner rising the highest to make contact. The centre back’s header was narrowly off target, with the ball inches over the cross bar.

The final action of the first half saw Yeovil have another attempt on goal. Some nice interplay on the near side saw Wakefield squeeze the ball through to Quigley, following a one-two pass. Quigley opened his body up to curl in the shot from the byline but Fitzsimons got down quickly to parry the ball away with his left palm.

Yeovil started the second half the same way they finished the first with the Glovers taking a shot on within the first minutes. A ball into the area from the far side was cushioned by the foot of Worthington to Quigley, but again the shot strays off target.

Fifty one minutes in, Weymouth had their first shot of the half when a long ball up to Bradley Ash allowed the winger to play in Ben Thomson. The striker took the ball to the edge of the area before unleashing a strike, although it was straight into the gloves of Grant Smith.

The game was back and forth, with the visitors etching out the next chance 57 minutes in. Charlie Wakefield was fed the ball in midfield before travelling up the pitch and trying an effort from outside the area. Fitzsimons got down to his left to put both hands on the ball which had taken a bounce, complicating the save.

Wakefield was looking more dangerous on the right side as the game went on. The winger cut in on the near side before curling a low shot goal bound through a crowded area. The ball made it through 2 defenders but Fitzsimons was again alert to the danger and stopped the threat.

Terras fans thought an equaliser was on the cards in the 78th minute when Ben Thomson was played through on goal after timing his run. The striker had time to take a strike, but in weighing up his options was tackled last minute by a defender, who had timed his challenge well according to referee Sunny Gill.

Weymouth drew level late again from a simple move. Shields played the ball out wide to Ollie Harfield who delivered the ball into the penalty area. Josh McQuoid rose to meet the ball and nodded it beyond Smith to take the game into extra time.

Shields came close to giving the Terras the lead 6 minutes into extra time when his cross into the area skimmed the cross bar.

The Glovers thought they’d gone a goal ahead just before half time when Quigley headed the ball onto the goal line but a Terras defender had cleared the chance off the line before the whole ball went over.

With minutes to go in the second half of extra time, substitute Brandon Goodship was through on goal. The striker took the shot on with his right boot, opening his body up in an attempt to curl it beyond Smith but the keeper palmed it clear.

Despite the chances from the Terras, Yeovil had the chance to win the game with seconds to go as they were awarded a penalty in added time of extra time when a deflected shot struck the arm of a defender. Set piece specialist Quigley stepped up to take the spot kick but Fitzsimons guessed the right way, diving low to his right to take the game to penalties.

McQuoid stepped up to take the first kick, going the same way as Quigley, with Grant Smith producing the same result. Substitute Ben Seymour skied Yeovil’s second penalty to draw the teams level but Shields miss gave Yeovil advantage again. Andy Robinson made the situation harder with his attempt smacking the upright. However, Tom Knowles missed the next kick to let the pressure fall onto Goodship, but the former Southend striker also cleared the crossbar allowing Yeovil to progress to the next round.
