Dorset Women’s Cup 1st Round (21/11/21)

Dani Ackerman was the star performer for Weymouth in just her second game for the club – bagging a hat-trick and two assists as the Terras dispatched of Broadstone with a clinical performance in the first round of the county cup.

The Terras were missing Kristina Manktelow and Sophie Webber-Green through injury, however, they were able to welcome back goalkeeper Kate Osment and Ashleigh Taylor in defence.

Weymouth began on the front foot and forced a string of early corners. On 6 minutes Ackerman’s delivery was flicked across to Kayleigh Whiting at the back post but she headed it just over the bar.

Shortly afterwards, Beth Barnard-Irons showed good feet to skip past the full-back and cut in from the left. She tried to curl a shot into the near post but it found the side netting.

Just past the quarter-hour mark, Weymouth made the breakthrough. Ackerman’s corner was cleared back to her. She took a touch and whipped a devilish delivery in which evaded everyone and nestled in the bottom corner of the net.

She was close to her second goal 5 minutes later, as she showed great control to swivel between two defenders on the edge of the box but the shot was just over the bar.

The second goal for Weymouth would arrive on 24 minutes as they were awarded a spot-kick for a handball, and captain Charlie Wilson slotted it into the bottom left corner to double the lead.

Ten minutes later Weymouth turned defence to attack with a brilliant passing move which eventually led to Beth Barnard-Irons squaring the ball to the unmarked Naomi Johnson in the box, and she made no mistake from close range to put Weymouth firmly in control.

Lily Beasley forced the home goalkeeper into a sharp save low to her left before Charlie Wilson fired wide of the mark from the edge of the box, as Weymouth continued to pile on the pressure.

And they got their rewards right on the stroke of halftime, as player-manager Tasha Sibley headed home Ackerman’s corner at the back post to send her side into the break 4 goals to the good.

Any thoughts of Weymouth taking their foot of the gas in the second half were banished just seconds after the restart as Ackerman was played in through the middle of the defence, and she rolled the ball into the bottom corner to make it 5-0.

On 51 minutes Lily Beasley did well to keep the ball in play on the byline, and she sent a cross in which was met by Beth Barnard-Irons at the back post, but her header was well saved by the goalkeeper.

The sixth goal for Weymouth would arrive just a minute later though, as Whiting headed Beasley’s corner towards goal and Naomi Johnson was on hand to back-heel the ball home from the edge of the six-yard box.

And the bombardment by corners continued, as Tasha Sibley bagged her second of the afternoon just before the hour mark – arriving at the back post again to slot home Ackerman’s corner for 7-0.

Beth Barnard-Irons again went close on 67 minutes when she met a Beasley cross and fired narrowly wide of the mark before another Beasley cross was met by Johnson who saw her powerful effort brilliantly saved by the home goalkeeper.

Dani Ackerman would complete her hat-trick in some style 5 minutes from time- unleashing an absolute rocket of a strike from some 30 yards which flew into the top corner. The home goalkeeper managed to get her fingertip to the ball but it was unstoppable. Maybe there’s something in the air at Broadstone, as Shakira Howard also scored a memorable long-range free-kick there last season.

Howard was unlucky not to get on the score sheet in the last minute of this one, as her stinging effort was well saved by the home goalkeeper for what would be the last action of the game.

It was a confident, dominant and clinical performance from the Terras, and they’ll be hoping for a repeat performance and result when they face the same opposition in the league next Sunday.

Terras: Osment, Taylor, Potter, de Havilland, Whiting, B.Barnard-Irons, Sibley, Wilson, Ackerman, Howard, Beasley.

Subs on: C.Barnard-Irons, Johnson.
