Match Preview: Weymouth v Southend United – Saturday 8th January 2022 – 15:00
Brian Stock’s side return to the Bob Lucas Stadium this Saturday afternoon as they face Southend United in the Vanarama National League.
THE TERRAS
Last time out in the league, Weymouth fell to a 3-2 defeat away to Eastleigh. Despite a second half comeback, through goals by Brandon Goodship and Josh McQuoid, Eastleigh struck in injury time to take all three points, with Weymouth looking to this weekend to get back to winning ways, to steer clear of the drop zone.
The thoughts of manager Brian Stock ahead of the game:
On tomorrow’s game: “It’s a big game for us, we want to try and rectify our recent form and there’s no better way to start than tomorrow at home against Southend. It’s going to be a tough game as they always are in this league.”
On Southend: “Performance wise they have improved a lot under Kevin Maher, they are organised, they have a nice blend of youthfulness and experience in the team. They have good quality all over the pitch and are a threat going forward as well, they’ve got some good attacking players in Dalby, Murphy and Dennis.
On preparations: “We’ve done our homework on Southend, we’ve had a good week’s training, we were bitterly disappointed after Eastleigh, so we want to put things right and get a result that will please everyone.”

HUNGERFORD TOWN 0-1 TERRAS (FA TROPHY)
WREXHAM 1-0 TERRAS
TERRAS 1-2 TORQUAY UNITED
TERRAS 2-3 WOKING
TERRAS 1-4 ALTRINCHAM
Weymouth currently sit 21st in the table with 15 points from 20 games.
THE SHRIMPERS
Following relegation from League 2 last season, Southend United find themselves sitting just one place above Weymouth in the league with 16 points from 19 games. Similarly to Weymouth, they have managed just four league victories so far this season. Those victories came away against King’s Lynn Town and Altrincham and home against Dover and Eastleigh. Southend did reach the first round of the FA Cup but were knocked out by Chesterfield. The Shrimpers have picked up two points in their previous six matches, but their last match was on Boxing Day, which was a 1-1 draw away to Bromley. This is because a COVID-19 outbreak at the club forced Southend to postpone their reverse match against Bromley on the 2nd January, meaning the Shrimpers head into this weekend without having played for almost two weeks.
Player To Watch: Rhys Murphy
Rhys Murphy has seven goals to his name so far this season in the league and will be eyeing up a chance to add to his tally this weekend. The 31-year-old, who has Football League experience, having played in League 1 and 2 in his career, has scored against some of the league’s top sides including Wrexham and Halifax this season, as the Terras defence will certainly need to keep a watchful eye on this experienced forward.
