Match Preview: Weymouth v Dag & Red – Tuesday 25th January 2022 – 19:45

Weymouth are back at the Bob Lucas Stadium tonight as they take on Dagenham and Redbridge in the Vanarama National League.

THE TERRAS

It was a positive start to life under new manager David Oldfield as Weymouth picked up their first point since October against high fliers Boreham Wood at the LV Bet Stadium on Saturday. An own goal from Jamie Reckford following a cross from Ollie Harfield from the left flank leveled the score, after an earlier Wood goal scored by Frankie Raymond.

David Oldfield was pleased with the collective performance of his team on Saturday, but stressed that Weymouth can’t take anything for granted, and “are back to square one”, as they will need to work even harder to be able to follow up on Saturday’s point. This will be David Oldfield’s first home fixture in charge of Weymouth and himself and the team will be eager to build on the point they took at Boreham Wood as we continue our fight to stay in the National League for next season.

THE DAGGERS

Daryl McMahon’s Dagenham and Redbridge side have picked up 12 victories in their 24 games played so far this season. Their last fixture saw Stockport County record a 2-0 away win over the Daggers on Saturday which broke Dagenham’s 7 game unbeaten run in all competitions. Dag & Red are also the current league top scorers with 45 goals scored in their 24 games played. They have also managed to take three points in style from some of the league’s current frontrunners such as a 4-2 win over Bromley in their first home game of the season plus a 5-1 thrashing of Solihull Moors. But Dagenham have also slipped up at key moments which has caused them to slip down the table with losses to some of the teams in the bottom half such as Woking, Yeovil and Eastleigh which opens up an opportunity for Weymouth to battle hard and inflict another stumble in Dagenham’s push for promotion out of the National League.

Player To Watch: Angelo Balanta

Colombian striker and captain of the Daggers, Angelo Balanta, has been a threat in attack for Daryl McMahon’s side so far. He has scored 8 goals in 17 appearances for the Daggers so far. The Terras defence will be determined to keep the front line quiet considering Dagenham’s influence in front of goal so far this season as top scorers.

@TerraStatman’s Facts Of The Match

Terras Statman, Duncan Gardner analyses our opponents ahead of the game.

There is a simple and a hard way of doing this! If we just look at games v the modern Dagenham & Redbridge (1992) our record is – P6 W1 D2 L3 GF8 GA12.

(Goals – Jake McCarthy(2), Josh McQuoid, Josh Leslie-Smith, Ash, Raphael Nade, Ben Smith, Lee Philips)

But…our opponents today are the latest incarnation of several mergers over the years so if we include games against all incarnations (Dagenham, Leytonstone & Ilford, Ilford, Redbridge Forest) our record is – P29 W11 D9 L9 GF42 GA40.

Current Terras players Ollie Harfield and Sean Shields were former Daggers players.

We have also never failed to score against D&R in all six meetings. From current squad, McQuoid, Ash & Leslie-Smith all have a goal apiece. Shields and Robinson both have two assists to their name against these opponents. Thommo still stuck on 249 appearances so will make 250 if he plays.

Daggers History against The Terras

Daggers drawn

Looking back at games versus all teams that went on to form the current club – we first played Ilford way back in 1894/95 & 1895/96, both friendlies at home, both 1-1 draws. It would then be nearly another 80 years before we would again cross paths with one of the teams that now forms today’s visitors. That was a 0-1 loss away at Dagenham in 1975 in the FA Trophy. Six years later we would again have an FA trophy tie but this time against Leytonstone & Ilford, the London side prevailing after a replay. A couple of years later we sought trophy revenge but that was the last time we would play that particular team. The 1980’s heralded a swathe of games against Dagenham FC, 14 matches in the Alliance Premier league, yet another FA Trophy tie and two league cup games with Weymouth winning the majority of these encounters.

Valiant effort!

Our next meeting in 2001 was the first against the modern side, yet another FA Trophy game although this one was ‘big ticket’ as far as Weymouth were concerned. We were mid-table in the Southern league and “The Daggers” were riding high in the conference a division above. However, they had just taken Premier League Charlton Athletic to a replay in the FA Cup and fans thought that distraction may prove beneficial, and so it did as we went on to win 1-0 that day. We then went on to the 5th round of the Trophy that season, our best run since 1976-77.

HEAD TO HEAD

In our previous encounter this season against Daryl McMahon’s side, we fell to a 4-2 defeat but the Terras were very much competitive throughout the game. In the first half Josh Leslie-Smith put the Terras ahead in the sixth minute, followed by the Dagenham equalizer on 21 minutes through Mauro Vilhete. But Weymouth were awarded a penalty on 40 minutes which Bradley Ash converted. But Dagenham pulled ahead in the second half with two goals from Will Wright and another from Paul McCallum against a tiring Terras side to secure the three points for the Daggers.
