Match Preview: Yeovil Town v Weymouth – Tuesday 1st February – 19:45

It’s Derby Day in the Vanarama National League as Weymouth take on bitter rivals Yeovil Town at Huish Park.

THE TERRAS

An own goal from Brandon Goodship in stoppage time saw the Terras fall to defeat against Aldershot Town in a game in which the Terras spent the game much the better side. That feeling was shared by manager David Oldfield who was frustrated by the result of the match, but noted there were many positives to take from that game. Given the level of performances over the previous few matches, there will be optimism that the team can find a way to get a result tonight, with Derby Day a great opportunity to get back to winning ways in the league.

After the Aldershot match, David Oldfield said ahead of the game: “We have to give ourselves a chance, we got to make the right decisions to help win the game for us and we also need a platform on which we can build on. We’re very much looking forward to the game and I’m sure the fans will be fantastic.”

THE GLOVERS

Darren Sarll’s side currently sit 11th in the National League table with 10 wins from their 23 games played so far, with two victories from their previous six league matches including a double defeat to Torquay United and also defeat to Southend United. But in all competitions, it’s just the one win in the last six for the Glovers. Through the season so far, they have picked up results against some of the league’s heavyweights with wins over Wrexham, Bromley and Dagenham in November. In their previous fixture, ten man Yeovil beat Woking by a goal to nil through a first half goal by Charlie Wakefield. Defender Mark Little was shown a red card and will therefore miss Derby Day as a result. In the cups, Yeovil reached the third round of the FA Cup but were defeated at Huish Park by Championship Bournemouth. A week later, the Glovers crashed out on penalties at home to Needham Market in the FA Trophy Fourth Round.

Player To Watch: Charlie Wakefield

23 year old midfielder Charlie Wakefield has scored three goals in the National League this season plus two in the FA Cup. He scored in Yeovil’s previous match against Woking. With the departure of striker Joe Quigley this month to Chesterfield, Wakefield and the attacking line will be keen to provide and try to score chances against the Terras tonight.

@TerraStatman’s Facts Of The Match

“In all games including the former Yeovil FC from 1890-1894 we have played against our neighbours over the border an astonishing 252 times. Putting it another way it amounts to almost 4% of all our games or 1 in every 26 games have been against the green & whites.

Our record is W99 D47 L106 and although our opponents will knock a couple of wins off that tally as they claim their current club started in 1895, the prospect of that 100th win makes good headlines and we can argue we are still ahead in the goals count with 420 scored to 418 conceded.

However in recent times our Somerset rivals have had the advantage. The last Weymouth victory of any description was a December friendly in 2002, Craig Riglar scoring the only goal in front of a freezing crowd of just 278. For the last competitive victory over our foes we have to go back to that famous Boxing Day game in 1988 when the Claret & Blues stunned the Huish Park crowd to win 3-2 after being 2-0 down well into the second half and seemingly dead and buried. That was our solitary away win of a relegation season from the football conference. Since that triumph we have a W5 D7 L14 record but in competitive games we have only managed three cup draws (of which one was a “lost tie” in the FA Cup penalty shootout this season), three league losses and an FA Trophy loss.

Our league encounters last season were our first noteworthy meetings in 20 years but Mensah was the only scorer for us over the two games. This campaign in the FA Cup, Bearwish famously scored late on his birthday after coming on as a sub and in the replay McQuoid also came off the bench to score. Five Terras players have featured in all four games this season and last – Brooks, Fitzsimons, Goodship, Mussa, Shields. In the quartet of matches, Yeovil have taken the lead on each occasion and always within the first 20 minutes of the game.

Of the 17 games on this day in history we have won 6 and played Yeovil on this day in 1961, a 1-2 loss in a benefit game for Robshaw the Yeovil groundsman!”
