Match Preview: King’s Lynn Town v Weymouth – Saturday 5th February – 15:00

David Oldfield’s Terras travel to Norfolk to face strugglers King’s Lynn Town in the Vanarama National League tomorrow afternoon.

THE TERRAS

It was Derby Day on Tuesday night as Weymouth faced bitter rivals Yeovil Town. Sean Shields gave Weymouth the perfect start after four minutes with his finish at the back post. Weymouth went into the second half with a 1-0 lead however Yeovil pulled one back as Adi Yussuf’s shot deflected off Cordner and rolled into the net on 52 minutes. But Weymouth continued to create chances but also defended well especially in the dying minutes to take the point, as the team continues to build on positive performances from the previous games. Another massive game awaits however in Weymouth’s fight for survival, as a tough test at King’s Lynn Town is next on the agenda.

The thoughts of manager David Oldfield ahead of tomorrow’s match:

“We know this is a big challenge for us, it’s a huge match. But every game is huge and as before, we need to be ready and raring to go. The game will be frenetic and very competitive, I’m sure. King’s Lynn are an improving side and this will be a really tough test for the team.”

THE LINNETS

Tommy Widdrington’s King’s Lynn Town side currently sit 22nd in the league with 3 wins from 23 games so far this season. They have only one win at The Walks so far this season and are currently on a run of five defeats in a row in the league. Their last league win came via a 2-1 win over bottom side Dover Athletic on the 11th of December. Their other two wins this season in the league came away to Maidenhead United in October with a 3-2 win and a 2-1 win away to ten man Yeovil Town in August. The Linnets reached the Fourth Round of the FA Trophy but lost to Tonbridge on penalties, however in the FA Cup, King’s Lynn Town faced Walsall at the Walks but narrowly lost by one goal to nil. Survival in this league for King’s Lynn Town will prove to be difficult as they are currently fourteen points off safety, but they do have games in hand. A few favourable results may give the team confidence that they can fight until the end, starting with the Terras tomorrow afternoon.

Player To Watch: Michael Clunan

Top scorer so far for King’s Lynn Town is skipper Michael Clunan with four goals. Formerly part of the Norwich City youth ranks, the 28 year-old’s last goal came against Notts County last month in their 4-2 defeat at the Walks. The Terras will have to be mindful of the threat that the skipper shows going forward as he looks to help King’s Lynn pick up a much needed three points.

@TerraStatman’s Facts of the Match

Our record against the reformed King’s Lynn club is very good with our only loss against the Norfolk based outfit being the 0-3 Southern league playoff loss at The Walks in 2018. We have also enjoyed five wins and four draws and we have a W1 D3 L1 record on our travels there.

Last season a 2-1 home victory for the Terras in October was followed up by a 2-2 draw away with all the goals scored in the first half, Dallas & Robinson for us with Denton & King for our opponents. Both Lynn scorers are still in their squad for this weekend.

In this campaign Mussa put the frighteners on the linnets with the only goal of the game on Halloween weekend but will miss the return match following his dismissal at Yeovil on Tuesday night.

A couple of possible player landmarks looming with Josh McQuoid set to make his 100th appearance for the club. Meanwhile Ben Thomson remains marooned on 249 outings and Ross Fitzsimons could make his 30th consecutive showing between the sticks having played every minute this season to date.

If history is anything to go by it will be a goalfest by The Wash this weekend as our last six games on 5th Feb have averaged over five goals with Weymouth scoring at least twice on each occasion!
