Match Preview: Altrincham v Weymouth – Tuesday 8th March 2022 – 19:45

Weymouth are back on the road as they head north to face Altrincham tonight in the Vanarama National League.

THE TERRAS

A stumble in the road to safety for Weymouth at the weekend as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Halifax. Two second half goals from Tom Bradbury and Zach Dearnley saw the Shaymen leave Dorset with all three points, and Weymouth suffering back to back defeats.  Manager David Oldfield highlighted the frustration and disappointment that he and the team felt following the game and will be eager to quickly put things right. But tonight will be another massive challenge for the Terras as the pressure will be on both sides to get a result, one which could see Weymouth close the gap, or one that sees Altrincham tiptoe away from the danger of the drop.

THE ROBINS

Altrincham currently sit 17th in the league table with 9 wins from 31 games and are 12 points clear of the relegation zone. They have picked up eight points in their last six games with wins over Dagenham and Redbridge and King’s Lynn Town and draws with Maidenhead and Woking. They’ve also picked up some strong wins this season against some of the league’s heavyweights including Notts County and Torquay United. The Robins have five wins, two draws and seven losses at home, picking up three points more than the Terras at home this season, having played three games less. They will be confident they can continue to achieve a strong mid-table finish to the season and grab three points at the J.Davidson Stadium tonight.

Player To Watch: Ryan Colclough

Eight goals so far this season for Ryan Colclough who joined the Robins from Scunthorpe in the summer of 2020, with his last goal scored in their 1-0 win over King’s Lynn Town, and scored a brace in the game before that against Woking. The Robins will be looking to Colclough to create and score chances to help grab all three points tonight at the J.Davidson Stadium.

@TerraStatman’s Facts of the Match

The Terras will be looking to get their campaign back on track in Greater Manchester and avoid not scoring for a third consecutive game for the first time since the start of last season. But traditionally Moss Lane (now officially the J Davidson stadium) has not been fertile ground for the Terras as they have not scored in the last two games here and in four of the last six visits.

However one player who seems to enjoy playing against the Greater Manchester based outfit is Sean Shields who picked up an assist in each of the last two encounters against the Robins so hopefully he will have recovered from an illness that has run through the squad.

In recent times, our last game was hampered by an early Bearwish red card before we succumbed to a 1-4 defeat back at the BLS in November with Ryan Colclough & Matty Kosylo each bagging a brace for our opponents. Both players are still in their squad today. Last season we made this trip on the opening day of the campaign but both teams cancelled each other out without scoring on a very wet pitch. The return fixture in May was a 2-1 win for the Terras courtesy of a Dallas brace.

Only a small handful of players have appeared for both clubs but the short list does contain a couple of famous names from the past – Matt Bailey, Graham Carr, Colin Chesters, Peter Conning, Mick Doherty and Gary Simpson.

Ross Fitzsimons will today aim to become the first Weymouth goalkeeper to play in two consecutive games against Altrincham since Len Bond in 1987, 16 meetings ago.
