Weston-super-Mare Vs Weymouth
Isuzu FA Trophy Second Round, Woodspring Stadium, Saturday 16 November, 15:00 GMT
Another cup competition, Terras fans!
Just four days after our comfortable 3-0 win at Wimborne sees us travel back to Weston-super-Mare for the second time in less than two weeks!
Though they remain the league-leaders, as they were last time round, this fixture takes place in the second round of the Isuzu FA Trophy, meaning that this one-off tie is anyone’s game to lose.
Whether that is an advantage to us, we will find out by tomorrow evening…
But as Mark Molesley told us yesterday, “playing in games like these will only help us.”
Plus, we’re hardly an easy team to face right now, with just one loss in our last seven games in all competitions.
CLUB NEWS
But despite our good form, we have not managed to score more than one goal in any of our games during this time.
If we are to improve on our tally today, it will have to be without our teenage talisman Jaiden Bartolo, who went away with Gibraltar to represent this country in the UEFA Nations League this week.
He was in the side for last night’s clash with famous minnows San Marino, drawing 1-1 in the process.
Though Liam Walker looked to have won the game for Gibraltar with a first-half penalty, San Marino’s 90th-minute equaliser diminished any hope for an important win.
But rest assured Terras fans, today could see the direct swap of one marksman for another, after goal-machine Brandon Goodship started on Tuesday and completed the first half.
How we’ve missed the nearly-100-club man!
FA-Trophy Tales
If any team understands the intensity of this cup competition, it’s both of today’s sides.
The reason being that both The Seagulls and Terras experienced the dreaded penalty shoot-out during their journey in this competition lastlllcampaign.
Scott Bartlett’s side were up against Gateshead, having made it all the way to the fourth round.
The game itself was a magical end-to-end spectacle expected of any cup tie; after the North-East unit scored either side of half time to give themselves a 2-1 lead, the Somerset stalwarts were deep in stoppage time with very little time left for an equaliser.
But with virtually the last kick of the game, a corner from Dayle Grubb swung into the head of Lloyd Humphries, who grabbed a much needed second goal at the death.
Though the FA Cup would offer a replay after this game, today’s competition fails to provide the same reward, thus ensuring a subsequent penalty shoot-out.
But despite The Seagulls’ salvage, they were less successful from the round of spot kicks, narrowly losing 4-3 to their opposition.
Fans won’t need reminding that we were in a very similar position last season, albeit a round earlier.
Like today’s hosts, we also forced a penalty shoot-out deep into stoppage time, although we were more successful from the spot, Anthony Cheshire sending us through as we decisively ran out 4-1 on penalties.
Though our celebrations were all for nothing by the next round, as we were beaten 2-0 by lower-league side Hendon.
