Welling United V Weymouth

National League South, Park View Road, Tuesday 7 January, 19.45 GMT

The game never stops does it, Terras fans?

After our narrow-but-respectable defeat at home to Boreham Wood at the weekend, denying us a chance to enter the FA Trophy last-16, we travel to the capital after three days’ rest for our second out of seven league fixtures in a very busy month.

No wonder Warren Feeney described this run as “tricky.”

Standing in our way are a former club of his, Welling United, who sit in 20th-place and nine points ahead of us, with one more game played.

We don’t need to tell you the implications of this match, do we?

A win tonight would not only take us up to 21st in the table, a clear improvement from rock-bottom, we would also find ourselves just six points off safety with a game in hand.

Still, our manager is understandably reluctant to get carried away just yet, has he made clear to us today that tonight’s fixture was “just another game…”

WARREN GIVES YOU WINGS

We may be used to seeing Warren in our dugout by now, but in March 2022 it was “The Wings” who saw the ex-Northern Ireland international take charge, looking to achieve a similar outcome to what we are this season.

Appointed on 14 March 2022, he was replacing ex- England U21 boss Peter Taylor after a 1-1 draw versus Bath City left them just four points above the relegation zone.

Put simply, Warren had a clear task to do.

But it was one he achieved, his side picking up a crucial 11 points in their final 10 league games of the season to finish in the final place above the drop.

As The Wings were now in its fourth managerial stint in just over two years, the club seemed eager to move on from their “difficult period” as Warren was rewarded with a new contract before the next campaign.

That year would then see him establish a season of much-needed stability as he guided them to 16th, 10 points safe.

Fast forward two seasons and he has once again been called to save the day, this time on our behalf as we look to move our tough year forward.

So far, our start under our new gaffer has been more-than-respectable with our three league draws, one being against table-toppers Torquay United, being a noticeable improvement on our previous four consecutive losses.

In the same timeframe, The Wings, now led by Rod Stringer, have lost all three of their contests.

Form under Stringer, who has been in charge for almost a calendar year, has been hard to come by this season, with three wins in their opening seven league games then being followed by just four in their subsequent 17.

So despite winning five more league games than us, tonight presents the opportunity for our mighty Terras to go just six points behind with a game in hand…
