Terras start New Year with vital point after Goodship equaliser
Summary:
A second half strike from Brandon Goodship rescued a point for Weymouth in a local derby with Wimborne Town. A poor first half had seen the Terras fall behind to Cam Munn’s long-range effort, but an improved performance after the break saw the team get the New Year off to an unbeaten start.
Match Report:
Weymouth opened up the New Year with another local derby, as they faced Wimborne Town for the fourth (and final) time this season. And the Terras were in confident mood after their victory over Dorchester the previous week. With that in mind, the only change Jamie Wells made to the squad was a start for Evan Watt in defence, with Douglas dropping to the bench after his early withdrawal in the last game.
The Terras started the game fairly brightly, and there was a chance for Pollock within the first couple of minutes, but his shot was smothered by the Wimborne keeper. However, as the game progressed, the atmosphere became more muted as the visitors imposed themselves. Joe Smith had a great opportunity to put Wimborne in front after 6 minutes but headed over the bar from inside the 6-yard box. A few minutes later Bustamente hit a low shot from inside the penalty area, but it went straight into the arms of Max Evans.
When Wimborne did take the lead after 18 minutes, it was a speculative effort from some 40 yards out. Munn spotted Evans off his line and lofted the ball towards the goal. Weymouth’s retreating keeper managed to get a glove on the ball but couldn’t keep it out. Apart from a Bearwish effort that flew over the bar from 20 yards out, it was the visitors who dominated the rest of the half. Bustamente shot wide and Joe Smith headed over, both from close range, and Weymouth were lucky to go in at half-time just a goal behind.
The Terras came out with more purpose in the second half, though Wimborne were proving difficult to break down. After 56 minutes the visitors had the ball in the net once again, but Terras fans were thankful to see the linesman’s flag go up for offside. Then just a minute later Weymouth were level. Great persistence from Pollock to win the ball in the Wimborne box, he pulled it back towards the penalty spot where Goodship was waiting to drive his shot into the bottom right corner.
Wimborne immediately fought to regain the lead, with Joe Smith having a couple more headed chances, but as the game progressed it was the Terras who looked more likely to snatch a winner. Pollock shot over from 25 yards, Burrows pulled a shot wide after cutting inside from the left, and another long-range effort from Bearwish was deflected into the keeper’s arms. In injury time Barney Stone wriggled clear of two defenders but couldn’t keep his shot down, and that would be the last chance of the game.
On the balance of play a draw was probably a fair result, though Wimborne will be disappointed not to have capitalized on their first half domination while Weymouth will rue their missed chances towards the end of the game. This point lifts Weymouth above Plymouth Parkway and out of the relegation zone into 18th place, albeit the teams below them all have at least 3 games in hand.
Reaction:
Speaking to Radio Terras after the game, manager Jamie Wells called it “a game of two halves”. He wasn’t very happy with the first half performance and asked the team to impose their own game after the break with “less worrying about the opposition”. At the final whistle, he was “disappointed to come away with a draw … I thought we were going to nick one at the end”. Looking forward, Jamie wants his players to “have belief in what we’re trying to do”.
Next Saturday the Terras face one of their longest trips of the season as they travel to Worcestershire to take on Evesham United.
