Terras punished by five-star Uxbridge
Summary:
Weymouth suffered a comprehensive defeat in west London on Saturday which brought their relegation battle into sharp focus. Two goals down at half-time, Bearwish gave the travelling fans some hope when he pulled one back with half an hour still to play. But Uxbridge only took four minutes to restore their two-goal lead, and went on to score two more as the Terras suffered one of their worst defeats of the season.
Match Report:
With Max Evans suspended following last week’s red card, Weymouth were forced into a change between the sticks, with Matt Wonnacott arriving on a short-term loan from Torquay. And with Charlie Betts also unavailable, Genesini moved across to the right with Matt Neale filling in as left wing-back. Burrows came into the midfield while Swann started up front with Reid dropping to the bench. Two further additions to the bench were Harry Dillon as reserve goalkeeper and Matt Carson returning on loan from Torquay after his stint earlier in the season.
It was a slow start to the game for the Terras, who found themselves behind within 17 minutes. Their defence was pulled out of shape after good work down the right from Uxbridge, and Okine-Peters was left unmarked to tap in from close range. Ten minutes later the home side had doubled their lead when a long ball from Lawal found Moore, whose powerful finish gave Wonnacott no chance.
Weymouth responded better after the half-time break, looking to make a game of it. An early free-kick on the left wing was just a little too far out for Goodship to really test Underwood. A great chance was presented to Swann after 51 minutes when he rounded the Uxbridge keeper but was unable to get his shot away from a tight angle before Fearn did enough to block his path.
The Terras were rewarded for their efforts on 62 minutes when Bearwish struck a low drive past Underwood from just inside the penalty area to reduce the deficit. Unfortunately that was as good as it got for the travelling fans. A few minutes later Prior-Tack was pulled down just outside the Weymouth penalty area, and Moore had no trouble in dispatching the free-kick round the Terras’ six man wall and out of reach for Wonnacott.
With their two-goal lead restored, Uxbridge resumed control of the game as Weymouth ran out of ideas. Their lead was extended rather too easily after 80 minutes when the Weymouth defence failed to deal with a corner, and Montague gratefully bundled the ball over the line. Three minutes later the result was complete after Neale tangled with Montague in the penalty area and Moore stepped up to dispatch the resulting spot-kick, sending Wonnacott the wrong way to complete his hat-trick.
Reaction:
Speaking to Radio Terras after the game, Jamie Wells said it was “a very bad day at the office … I wasn’t expecting that”. From the first half, he conceded “we didn’t get going … decision making was poor, desire was poor”. Reflecting on his small squad, Jamie admitted “we’ve had a number who haven’t trained this week due to illness …” but made it clear that “… if you’re going to turn up and play, you’ve got to be bang on it”.
With this loss Weymouth are now just one place and one point clear of the relegation zone, having played more games than all the teams around them. They need to start picking up points quickly, but face a stiff task next Saturday when Farnham Town are the visitors, who sit 4th in the league after three straight wins scoring 12 goals in the process.
