Weymouth bruised by Farnborough comeback

WEYMOUTH suffered a second-half collapse to concede three goals and a 3-1 half-time lead as Farnborough stormed back through braces from Connor Calcutt and Luke Robertson in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South.

Ben Thomson fired in with six minutes on the clock and goals from Abdulai Baggie and Stephane Zubar either side of Calcutt’s first goal seemingly had Weymouth cruising to another victory.

However, Farnborough battled on and claimed a huge swing in momentum to turn the match around and claim all three points.

Weymouth were unchanged from their 5-0 mauling of Dorchester on Monday while Tiago Sa, who did not feature on Monday, signed for Dorchester on Friday evening on a one-month loan deal and he started in their at 2-1 victory at home to Hartley Wintney.

The first half was one-sided as Weymouth looked like continuing their great early-season form.

Baggie did well to get forward early on for Weymouth and put a ball across the box but no one could get on the end of it.

The Terras would not have to wait long for their opening goal however, as Thomson took down a long ball and curled a delightful shot into the top corner for his fourth goal in three games with six minutes on the clock.

Weymouth did not have to wait long to double their lead either, when Josh McQuoid worked well with Goodship who drove forward and squared the ball to Baggie who fired in.

Thoughts of another mauling were kept in check after 20 minutes however, when Jordan Seabright was forced into a double save to preserve the Terras’ two-goal lead.

Callum Buckley tried an effort seven minutes later from a free-kick out wide but could not get it on target.

Three minutes later Weymouth’s hopes of keeping a third consecutive clean-sheet were dashed when Calcutt headed in for Farnborough from a corner to narrow the scores, despite Buckley’s best efforts to keep it out.

However, the Terras have scored heavily of late and it would not be long before they hit at least three goals past a side for their fourth match in six games.

Josh Wakefield played a wonderful ball up to Zubar who was waiting at the Farnborough back post to nod in and restore the two-goal advantage for Weymouth.

The Terras could not add to their score further as the first-half ended with them 3-1 up.

The second half got off to a slow start as both sides struggled to create chances with little indication of the drama that was to follow.

Eight minutes in Josh Carmichael fired an effort in from just outside of the box but it was comfortably saved by Lenny Pidgeley in the Farnborough goal.

The Yellows were still posing a threat however, and a fantastic move forward resulted in a shot from close-range that Seabright did brilliantly to save and preserve the Terras’ two-goal cushion.

The second half was struggling to truly get going however, as Weymouth seemed to be coasting towards to their fifth win of the season.

However, Farnborough were able to narrow the scores once more when they poured forward.

A strike was unleashed on goal which Seabright did well to save but from the rebound Luke Robertson stuck the ball past the Terras’ goalkeeper in the 69th minute.

Goodship was unable to add to his already considerable tally of eight goals this season when he was brought off for Warren Bentley in the 72nd minute.

Farnborough kept pressing and kept creating chances and it eventually paid off in the 79th minute as they grabbed an equalising goal.

The Yellows again got forward through the dangerous Robertson, who fired into the bottom corner to draw them level with the Terras.

Bad went to worse for Weymouth as Calcutt got his second of the match to complete the comeback for the Boro and hand them a lead for the first time in the match.

Zubar went close at the other end shortly afterwards as Weymouth looked to respond.

However, time was against them and they struggled to create further chances as Farnborough condemned Weymouth to their first defeat of the season.

Weymouth host Banbury United in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday (3pm).
