Brandon Goodship hits a hat-trick but Weymouth are held

WEYMOUTH were held to a 4-4 draw after a brilliant contest with both Brandon Goodship and Luke Robertson scoring hat-tricks in their Evo-Stik Southern Premier South tussle at Imber Court.

Cameron Murray thought he had won the match late on with his goal in the 86th minute, yet Robertson sealed a point for the home side at the death.

Callum Buckley and Ben Thomson, the latter who was rated 50/50 as to if he would make the match, came in for Jordan Ngalo and Harry Baker, who both picked up injuries in the 2-1 defeat to Basingstoke.

Luke Nippard, whose signing was announced prior to the match, joined Sam Sherring in making an appearance from off the bench, with the latter returning from injury.

With the rainy conditions in Surrey it was remarkable that the match went ahead, with the pitch seeming very waterlogged the day before.

The match opened with Ollie Knight on a surging run for the home side, but a heavy touch meant the ball was put out for a Weymouth goal-kick under pressure from Yemi Odubade.

Terras’ fans would not need to wait long for a goal as a brilliant flick by Abdulai Baggie found Goodship, who casually slotted the ball past Sam Mason to hand Weymouth the lead after six minutes.

Jack Mazzone was impressing for the Met Police and proved a thorn in the visitors’ side.

Firstly, he forced Weymouth goalkeeper Tom McHale into a good save with an ambitious overhead strike from a corner on the edge of the box.

The striker followed it up minutes later with a free-kick from the edge of the box, but again he was thwarted by McHale.

Blues’ forward Mazzone then had a lofted header from a corner that dipped and was seemingly dropping in before McHale again pushed the effort away.

However, Weymouth began to dominate proceedings shortly after.

Josh Wakefield tapped forward a free-kick to Odubade, who shot wide when he could have done better.

After 33 minutes, Goodship touched the ball back to Odubade, who fired over the bar before injury-time proved particularly eventful at the end of the first half.

Firstly, Oliver Robinson headed in a Max Blackmore free-kick to level.

Yet parity would remain for three minutes.

Calvin Brooks then poured forward, cut into the box before being fouled to hand Weymouth a penalty.

Despite frustrations from the home side and after consultations with the linesman, the penalty was confirmed and Goodship duly tucked the ball away.

The second half was initially a quiet affair, but soon enough the home side would have something to cheer about as after 57 minutes Robertson headed in a Knight cross past McHale to level for the Police.

However, Weymouth would retake the lead and it would be Goodship who wrapped up his hat-trick after 61 minutes.

Jake McCarthy struck a shot towards goal, which appeared to be heading wide before Goodship easily slotted in to the empty net.

It seemed Weymouth would hold onto their lead, with Goodship and Odubade seeing the ball cleared away from them when in potentially great positions.

Robertson had other ideas and would be in the perfect position to smash in low past McHale’s left to once again restore equilibrium for the home side.

The game quietened down as neither side could fashion a clear chance.

Yet Weymouth would have their late, seemingly-winning, goal as the Terras once more went ahead.

Odubade pulled the ball back across goal to Murray who fired in to applause from the considerable Weymouth contingent.

Though that would not be the final act of a thrilling and brilliant contest.

Further drama saw Robertson head in at the near post to secure a remarkable hat-trick and seal a point late on for the Blues as Weymouth squandered the lead for a fourth time.

The whistle blew for full-time four minutes later, with both teams threatening late on but the match was to end in a deadlock.

Weymouth travel to Merthyr Town on Tuesday (7.45pm).
