Strike duo send Weymouth to win over Marine

YEMI Odubade and Brandon Goodship each netted to hand Weymouth an important 2-1 victory at home to Swindon Supermarine in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South.

It was not a pretty performance but when required Weymouth were brutally effective, replying to ex-Terra Stuart Fleetwood’s 58th minute equaliser through Goodship after 60 minutes.

It saw Weymouth continue to extend their lead over their title rivals, with only Taunton Town keeping pace as the Met Police and Salisbury were both held to draws.

Cameron Murray replaced Josh Carmichael in the only change for Weymouth from their last league game.

On the bench, only Mark Childs kept his spot from the 0-0 draw with Wimborne.

It also capped a fine week for Goodship, who made his first appearance for England C on Tuesday.

The Terras began brightly and could have gone two goals up early on.

Ben Thomson bulldozed his way through the Swindon defence after three minutes and tried to slip a ball into Goodship but the ball came back to him off a defender.

Thomson then carried on his run into the box and went down under a challenge with brief appeals for a penalty.

Abdulai Baggie nearly got the scoring started with a brilliant effort out of nowhere, crashing a shot from 30 yards out off the post.

Swindon’s top scorer Conor McDonagh then pulled a ball back for Ryan Campbell who curled a shot over the bar for the visitors.

Weymouth’s bright start faded however, and the game entered a quiet spell.

Murray almost helped break it via a piercing run forward, as he slipped a ball in towards Thomson, whose ball back across was straight at Swindon goalkeeper Joshua Hill.

Goodship arrowed an effort just wide of the far post as Weymouth kept knocking on the Swindon door.

Thomson then saw an effort blocked away for a corner and from the clearance Jake McCarthy attempted a bicycle kick on goal which went wide.

Calvin Brooks was next to threaten for Weymouth after a jinking run forward allowed him to fizz a swerving shot at an angle that Hill had to beat away from danger.

Another scramble in the box soon followed as Weymouth just could not find a finishing touch.

Fleetwood then smacked a shot wide of the post from just outside the box as Swindon threatened on occasion.

But the breakthrough came in scrappy fashion after 42 minutes when Odubade was able to scramble the ball in from close range to hand the home side a vital lead.

After the break, Swindon were on good form, pressuring the Weymouth defence.

They were hurrying Weymouth and looking a threat going forward.

This work paid off in the end with a patient build-up in a very well-worked move that left Fleetwood to fire in from inside the box courtesy of a huge deflection off Stephane Zubar.

But Swindon were level for just two minutes, one of which was waiting for a penalty to be taken.

Weymouth stormed down the other end after Swindon’s goal and a Dan Williamson handball gave Weymouth a perfect opportunity to equalise.

Goodship made no mistake from the spot to hand Weymouth the lead.

Hill then provoked the ire of the crowd with a bizarre moment at the Bob Lucas.

The Swindon goalkeeper had the ball in his hands with Goodship stood a metre or so in front of him, but Hill refused to play the ball, seemingly objecting to where Goodship was standing.

Goodship was clearly perplexed by it, as were the crowd, before the referee ended the situation by awarding a free-kick to Swindon.

Further chances came through Goodship on the angle and another shot that was blocked away, yet the game was winding to a close at this stage.

Goodship was then warmly applauded off the pitch for Josh Wakefield as Weymouth saw out the closing stages of the match.

Weymouth eased home to claim a deserved three points and continue their title charge.
