Own goal enough as Terras snatch another late winner

WEYMOUTH snatched a dramatic late win in Vanarama National League South for the second time in four days as they triumphed 1-0 at Hemel Hempstead Town on Tuesday night to climb up to third in the table.

After Abdulai Baggie’s stoppage-time strike sunk Dorking Wanderers on Saturday, an own goal awarded the Terras all three points against Hemel as the ball was bundled home from a corner three minutes from time.

Terras boss Mark Molesley made two changes to the side that started the weekend’s 2-1 win at Dorking as Odubade and Adeoye Olumuyiwa dropped to the bench at the expense of Jack Hoey and Stephane Zubar.

Calvin Brooks returned to the matchday squad after a spell out injured.

The visitors started positively and Hoey fired an early effort from distance over the bar.

Jonathan Lacey was first to threaten for Hemel as he headed over the top following a promising move before a superb save from home keeper Daniel Grimshaw denied Weymouth’s Brett Williams the opening goal after 20 minutes as he kept out his close-range strike.

Most of Hemel’s threat came from an aerial route and Mitch Dickenson was just off target after challenging Weymouth keeper Calum Ward for a high ball into the box.

The Terras finished the half strongly and Baggie’s strike was pushed away by Grimshaw before Williams sent a header wide.

One more chance came for the visitors in stoppage time but Tom Whelan flashed an effort agonisingly across the face of goal as the half ended with the deadlock intact.

Weymouth were quick out of the blocks after the restart and Williams saw a shot saved by Grimshaw.

At the other end, Hemel were soon back into their stride too and Dickenson headed wide following a corner before Aron Davies spurned a gilt-edged chance from close range, failing to hit the target from just six yards out.

Weymouth rallied after a period on the back foot and Jake McCarthy and then Baggie brought the best out of Grimshaw to keep the score level.

Late efforts came and went for Weymouth before Grimshaw again did well to deny Baggie.

Just as the contest looked set to end in a stalemate, the decisive moment finally arrived three minutes from time as Odubade pounced from a corner, thinking he’d won the game for his side, however the goal was awarded to a Hemel defender.
