WEYMOUTH winger Lionel Ainsworth admitted he is keen to earn an extension to his stay at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
Ainsworth, 31, joined the Terras in late August having played previously for Watford, Motherwell and Plymouth Argyle.
In an earlier interview, Weymouth boss Mark Molesley revealed he was unsure whether Ainsworth would stay “short-term or long-term”.
But Ainsworth, who is yet to score or assist in four games, is focused on delivering on the pitch to maximise his time with the Terras.
He told Echosport: “There was a bit of interest, my agent got hold of them and they saw my name and thought ‘no chance, we’re not going to get him’ and just disregarded it.
“Then they saw I still hadn’t signed for anyone, they spoke to my agent and said would I be interested?
“I said ‘sure, why not? I’m interested’. I’ve signed a deal and we’ll see how it goes. Hopefully I can extend it, push it on or go from there – we’ll have to see what the manager’s plans are.
“If I do the business on the park, hopefully (the deal) will be extended. I’m just looking forward to having a chat when it comes around and see what’s what.”
With plenty of experience at Football League clubs during his 13-year career, Ainsworth echoed the thoughts of many players in praising Weymouth’s professionalism.
He said: “The manager’s got his own project with Bournemouth which is good because he brings the professionalism to this level.
“He’s got a plan and a vision of what he wants to do and it’s nice to be a part of that. It’s all going in the right direction but it’s a long season so we’ll take every game as it comes.
“We’re a footballing side and that’s a good thing. Everyone thinks it just gets kicked and boomed and that’s how you get promoted.
“Back in the day that used to happen and it did work. But we play really good football, there’s a lot of movement and we hurt teams.
“When we played against Welling you could see that with 11 men we took them to the cleaners. Obviously when they got the man sent off it was harder but we managed to win the game.
“I definitely reckon from what I’ve seen, and the teams I’ve played against and watched this year, we will be up there.
“I’ve seen teams in the (National League) and I’m not too sure about them, that’s me being honest. But we’ll be there or thereabouts.”
