Weymouth FC players recently visited two local schools as part of the club’s support of The Chesil Education Partnership.
Harrison Bruton and Charlie Wilson joined Weymouth FC Community Football Officer, Paul Tapper, in visiting Wyke Regis Infant School and Bincombe Valley Primary School.
At both schools the trio led an assembly to around 60 children to highlight the importance of reading. Both players discussed their first book, their favourite genre, where they read and their favourite author. They also highlighted the importance of reading for sportsmen and women in areas such as understanding contracts, match reports, coaching information and match details.
Paul Tapper said, “It’s been great to see so many children listening to Charlie and Harrison talk about their favourite books and the importance of reading.
The assemblies are very interactive and Charlie and Harrison take questions from the pupils and share their experiences of reading before finishing off with a quick round of ‘Kick the question ball at Charlie’. This involved Harrison picking pupils from the audience to come to the front and kick, or throw, the ball at Charlie who then got to ask the first question she saw on ball to the child. Both assemblies have been really interactive and fun! At Wyke we brought the assembly to a close by getting the kids to give a rousing chant of “Weymouth, Weymouth!”
I’d like to thank both schools for hosting us, the children at both schools were impeccably behaved. We’ll be back at the schools shortly to begin our 4 week coaching session with selected pupils and hopefully we’ll see some of them at the Bob Lucas Stadium soon.”
As part of our support of the Chesil Education Partnership players from our men’s and women’s teams will be visiting local schools to promote the importance of reading and it’s value to academic achievement.
Our partnership will also provide various incentives for the children who achieve reading goals such as, coaching sessions, matchday tickets, stadium tours and the opportunity to be a mascot for a home game.
