Terras slip to fourth defeat in a row despite strong finish
Summary:
An improved performance from Weymouth saw them push a very good Farnham side all the way, but they narrowly failed to stop their visitors taking all three points as they fell to a fourth successive defeat in the league. Owen Dean put Farnham ahead before half-time, and it was only the heroics of Max Evans that stopped them extending that lead after the interval. Burrows came on to score an equaliser after 68 minutes, but Farnham were back ahead just seven minutes later through Taylor, and they held on for the win.
Match Report:
Following last week’s disappointing performance at Uxbridge, Jamie Wells made several changes to the Terras’ line-up, particularly in the back line. Goalkeeper Max Evans returned from his suspension, Betts returned from illness at right wing-back and Brooks returned from injury in the middle of defence, while Carson came into the starting XI at left wing-back. Burrows and Genesini dropped to the bench, while Wonnacott and Neale were omitted from the squad.
Farnham came into this game on a good run of form, with four straight wins in all competitions, and soon showed why they were challenging the top three in the league. Their first real sight of goal came after 12 minutes, but Taylor’s volley was blocked on the line. Another chance fell to Taylor just a minute later, but he skewed his shot wide.
But the Terras also had their chances. Goodship tried his luck from distance, but couldn’t get enough power to beat Eacott, and on 18 minutes the Farnham keeper came rushing out of his area only to be beaten to the ball by Swann, but a heavy touch from the Weymouth winger saw the ball run out of play.
Taylor continued to cause problems for Weymouth, as he fizzed a low ball across the face of goal which Evans did enough to deflect out of harm’s way. With 5 minutes left until half-time, Owen Dean dragged a shot wide from the right side of the penalty area. But just a minute later he was presented with another chance from the same spot, picked out by a smart pass from his brother Jack, he made no mistake with a tidy finish into the top corner to put Farnham in front ahead of the break.
Farnham picked back up where they had left off after the interval, and it was only the acrobatics of Max Evans that stopped them from extending their lead. First Sanders struck a fierce effort from the edge of the penalty box which Evans tipped round the post and then Taylor tried his luck with a low shot from 25 yards out which saw Evans at full stretch to keep out. Minutes later Owen Dean found space in the penalty area and lashed in another effort which Evans beat away.
A mix up in the Weymouth defence after 60 minutes presented Dean with another opportunity to extend Farnham’s lead, but again Evans got down well to save. And a few minutes later the same player saw a deflected effort pushed round the post by Evans, with Bayliss heading inches over the bar from the resulting corner.
Weymouth had been restricted to a couple of long-range efforts up to this point, but the introduction of Reid and Burrows helped them find an equaliser within a few minutes. Reid set up Bearwish on the edge of the box, after good work down the right wing from Swann, but rather than shoot, Bearwish tucked a neat pass inside the defender to Burrows coming in from the left, who side-footed it under the Farnham keeper.
The Terras had their tails up, and for a few minutes looked like they might steal an unlikely win, but Farnham caught them out with a counter-attack on 75 minutes to retake the lead. Sam Evans found Taylor in the penalty area, who turned and arrowed a drive into the far corner.
Farnham struggled to control the game as the minutes ticked by, while Weymouth worked hard to rescue a point with the home fans urging them on. Swann had a great chance, latching onto a lofted pass from Goodship, but was unable to beat Eacott with his first-time effort. Then in injury time they had their last chance. Burrows won a free-kick on the edge of the area, which Goodship curled towards the top corner only to see it brilliantly kept out by Eacott at full stretch.
It was a great effort from Weymouth in the last 30 minutes against a very good side, but ultimately it was not enough to stop their visitors from taking all three points back to Surrey.
Reaction:
Speaking to Radio Terras after the game, Jamie Wells said it was “a good performance today, to be fair … I thought first-half it was an evenly matched game … we had opportunities and it could’ve gone either way”. Then after the break, Jamie thought “they came out a little bit more active than we did in the second half, but we found our way back into the game … I thought the game was there for us” but then Weymouth “let it slip”. Speaking about the next few games, he said “we’re playing everyone around us now so it’s going to be vital that we’re on it and we pick points up”.
This was a fourth consecutive loss for Weymouth, which sees them stuck in 19th place in the relegation zone, 3 points from safety. The next three games will go a long way to define the Terras’ season as they face three of the teams around them, starting with a trip to bottom side Tiverton Town on Saturday.
