Pat Suraci chip helps Weymouth beat Totton
AFC TOTTON 0
WEYMOUTH 1
WEYMOUTH knocked out AFC Totton in the second round of the BigFreeBet.com Challenge Cup thanks to a superb chip from Pat Suraci at the Total Branding Community Stadium.
Ashley Wells was out injured for the Terras and Harry Baker was suspended for the match, while Calvin Brooks and Brandon Goodship are still on the road to recovery.
The much-changed Weymouth side had six changes, with Jordan Seabright, Tiago Sa, Sean Stewart, Suraci, Harry McGrath and James Hayter replacing Mark Travers, Charlie Seaman, Charlie Davis, Jake McCarthy, Ben Thomson and Josh Carmichael.
After a slow start, Weymouth settled quicker into the match with McGrath nearly getting a shot away in the sixth minute.
In the 11th minute the Stags earned a free-kick in a good position but Jack Masterton fired high and wide.
Soon afterwards Curtis Young drove forward and took a shot which Seabright saved.
Weymouth grabbed the lead in the 17th minute as Suraci moved forward to the edge of the area before producing a wonderful chip that fooled Shane Murphy in the Totton goal.
Seven minutes later they nearly doubled their lead as Stewart hit the post from the edge of the area.
The Terras were on top as Mark Cooper nearly doubled their lead after finding space, but fired wide of the post.
A late corner for the Stags from Robin Nicholls failed to cause a problem as Weymouth went into the break a goal up.
The second half started in frantic style, with Pip Nolan failing to score with a powerful strike for the Stags before McGrath hit the post for the Terras.
Seabright had to be alert two minutes later as Nimes Pina took a shot from range which forced him into a save.
Nolan then went close with a header that he sent over the bar before substitute Tony Lee went close with an effort for the Stags.
On 73 minutes Lee then called Seabright into action with a fierce shot that the keeper had to parry.
A late free-kick had to be punched away by Seabright as Weymouth secured their place in the third round.
Mark Molesley’s men, currently fourth in the table, next face 15th-placed Biggleswade Town at home in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division on Saturday (3pm).
