DISAPPOINTED Jason Matthews admitted he felt a couple of his players “froze on the day” in their big FA Cup clash at Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday.

While they battled throughout against a powerful Kidderminster outfit at Aggborough, Weymouth were well and truly second best on the big stage and missed out in a place in the first round proper, eventually falling to a 6-0 loss.

Reflecting on the heavy defeat, Matthews told Echosport: “I felt disappointed for the lads because I don’t think they went out and did themselves justice.

“But, in saying that, I think we came up against a very good Kidderminster side. Big credit to them, they gave us a lesson and we got punished.

“I thought their set-pieces were excellent and we didn’t deal with them. We weathered the storm well for the first 25 minutes but the first two goals to give away were sloppy and, at the next level up, you cannot afford to do that.”

He added: “I felt that a couple of the lads froze on the day. It does happen from time to time. The boys have put in a magnificent shift over the last 12 games and we haven’t become a bad side overnight. I don’t think we did ourselves justice.”

The Terras’ hands were also tied by injuries to two of their striking options. Ben Thomson could only get through 45 minutes before coming off and Sam Jordan failed to feature from the bench.

“Ben’s hamstring was tight and he felt he was unable to carry on after half-time,” the Terras’ boss said. “He was feeling it in the week as well. Sam Jordan also felt his groin in the warm-up an was unable to come on, which did nullify us a little bit.”
