Myrie-Williams’ wonder strike helps decide top of the table clash

WEYMOUTH were beaten 2-0 in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division by a strong Hereford side who now look destined for promotion.

Returning Jennison Myrie-Williams unleashed an unstoppable strike to open the scoring before Keyon Reffell doubled the Bulls’ lead to see off Weymouth.

Weymouth went into the fixture with Harry Baker and Tiago Sa missing from the squad due to injury but were boosted by the signing of Brazilian defender Thiago Caze da Silva.

The game started slowly with neither sides prepared to give too much away; it wasn’t until the eighteenth minute when Hereford had their first opportunity, but Pablo Haysham could only shoot tamely on the turn and Will Dennis was able to gather it easily.

Ben Thomson then found himself involved in the start of an on-going battle between himself and the Hereford back four; after being warned in the 28^th minute about his physical style he was booked a minute later for pulling back James Bowen.

Thomson had a half-chance for Weymouth 35 minutes in when it looked like he had found a good opening, but he was only to be frustrated by Bowen again, who did well to get himself in the way and block Thomson’s run.

Elliot Richards shot just wide of the Weymouth goal shortly before he joined Thomson in the book when he lunged in on Carmichael after losing possession.

Both teams went into the break without having made a clear-cut chance between them.

Hereford made a lively start to the second half and there was a muted penalty appeal when Myrie-Williams went down in the box following minimal contact from Stephane Zubar.

Myrie-Williams, who was making his first start for the Bulls since returning to them on Friday, was soon to open the scoring with a wonderful strike from 20 yards out. Will Dennis at full stretch could do nothing but admire the effort as it clipped the crossbar and flew in to the top corner.

Around the hour mark, Stephane Zubar went into the book for a challenge on Bowen as Hereford began to assert some authority and frustrate the Terras.

Weymouth were starting to see their chances limited as Mark Molesley threw on Davis and Ngalo for Brooks and Wakefield as to help shore up the midfield.

Reffell doubled Hereford’s lead in the 69^th minute as a rare moment of uncertainty at the back for Weymouth gave the Hereford forward enough of an opportunity to poke the ball under Dennis.

Ashley Wells and Abdulai Baggie pushed to get Weymouth back into the game but an attack by each couldn’t find an opening for the Terras.

Caze da Silva was then handed his Weymouth debut in the 77^th minute when he was brought on for Brandon Goodship, freeing up McCarthy to join the midfield.

Late in the game Thomson had Weymouth’s first effort of the second half when he looked to have broken free of the Hereford defence but could only drag the resulting shot wide of the target.

Callum Buckley was hauled down during a late attack and won a free-kick in a dangerous position, however Davis’ resulting strike was deflected off the side of the wall for a corner.

Debutant Caze da Silva went closest for Weymouth when he headed narrowly wide into injury-time.

Hereford had one last chance to add to their tally when free-scoring John Mills broke free of the Weymouth defence only to be halted by a backtracking Josh Carmichael.

Weymouth now turn their attention to fellow playoff chasers Slough Town who visit the Bob Lucas Stadium next Saturday (3pm).
