EXETER CITY 2
Abrahams 9, Jay 87
WEYMOUTH fell to a narrow two-goal defeat at the hands of League Two side Exeter City in a performance that should encourage the Bob Lucas Stadium faithful ahead of the new season.
Weymouth had a threat to their attack and did not often look dominated by opposition three divisions above them.
Exeter were the first to see a sight of goal, with Jordan Seabright making a fantastic one-handed save from the Grecians’ Hiram Boateng who had lashed in from just outside of the box.
The Grecians took the lead after nine minutes however, when Tristan Abrahams was able to fire in from nine yards out past Seabright.
In the 14th minute, Brandon Goodship volleyed a superb effort narrowly wide from 25 yards out to audible gasps from the crowd.
Seven minutes later and Exeter almost had their second.
Stephane Zubar did well to clear away a cross from Aaron Martin for a corner, which the Grecians took short and Nicky Law curled in a delightful effort from outside of the box that Seabright did well to tip over the bar.
Weymouth went close with Thomson firing narrowly wide, forcing Grecians’ goalkeeper James Hamon to sprawl to his left after 28 minutes.
The first half ended with the two sides duelling, and Warren Bentley making a good first impression for the Terras with his pace problematic for Exeter.
The second half started with Weymouth sharp on the attack, as 10 minutes in Abdulai Baggie ran through and put a fantastic ball across the six-yard line with no one there to tap in.
Shortly after Goodship, from inside the box, flicked the ball over towards substitute Josh Wakefield but Exeter managed to clear.
In the 70th minute, with both sides having made widespread substitutions, Josh Key crossed the ball in for Exeter, Callum which Buckley headed away.
Weymouth scarcely avoided going two goals down when Archie Collins crossed in but Jordan Tillson aimed the wrong side of the post from two yards out.
Stockley then fired well over from outside the box for Exeter as the game wound to a close.
And the Grecians grabbed a late goal in the 87th minute when Matt Jay curled a fantastic strike beyond Seabright to seal the win.
