Penalty drama as Weymouth are denied

TONBRIDGE ANGELS 1

Yusuff 85

WEYMOUTH 1

Williams 49

PENALTY drama hounded Weymouth in a battling 1-1 draw away at the Tonbridge Angels in the Vanarama National League South.

Brett Williams tapped in after 49 minutes to hand the Terras a lead against the Angels but two penalties eventually saw the Angels equalise through Adam Yusuff.

The penalties, both for handball, came during the second half, and the second had to be retaken for a foul.

Weymouth goalkeeper Calum Ward was able to save the first penalty, from Joe Turner, but was unable to save Yusuff’s re-taken spot-kick.

Weymouth were able to boast the signing of former Watford and Plymouth Argyle winger Lionel Ainsworth before kick-off.

In other transfer news for Weymouth, Jordan Ngalo joined BetVictor Southern Premier South side Blackfield & Langley on a one-month loan deal.

New signing Ainsworth began the match on the bench, with the only change for Weymouth seeing Stephane Zubar replace Callum Buckley, who was absent from the squad entirely.

There were early concerns for Tonbridge, with a player down seemingly injured early on, but they were able to shake off a knock.

Weymouth had good, early possession but Tonbridge had a good early chance through Yusuff, but Calvin Brooks did well to intercept his run.

After seven minutes, Ollie Harfield created a great early chance for the Terras, as his deep cross found Williams inside the box, but he touched his effort wide of the post.

Williams was seeing plenty of action early on, and he went down inside the box under a challenge, with no penalty given, and shortly after Jake McCarthy fired over.

Tonbridge were beginning to threaten, but their corner was easily claimed by Ward.

Turner also saw an effort easily claimed by Ward, as the Angels enjoyed a good spell.

Yet Weymouth were able to threaten, as a counter attack saw the ball end up at the feet of Yemi Odubade, who struck well but was met with an equally good save from Tonbridge goalkeeper Jonathan Henly after 18 minutes.

After a good opening spell the game became quite quiet.

Odubade was proving a useful attacking outlet for the Terras during this half, but a poor cross was easily claimed by Henly.

Weymouth’s efforts were being snuffed out, such as a great ball from Wakefield to Baggie, who had his cross cut out.

Tonbridge had their chances, and were proving effective on the break, with the last real chance of the half coming from Turner, who beat Zubar and bent a shot wide.

The second half began at a fine pace.

It was ignited when a ball over the top found Odubade, who crossed in for Williams to tap in after 49 minutes.

Tonbridge responded, earning a quick corner, which eventually came to Rian Bray, who bent a shot narrowly wide.

The Angels had a penalty shout not long later, when a player went down inside the box among a crowd of Weymouth players, but the referee waved the appeals away.

Weymouth were looking vastly sharper, with Robinson seeing a great effort towards the bottom corner parried away by Henly.

D’Sean Theobalds was able to earn a penalty however.

He fired a shot in through a crowd, but the ball hit a hand, and after a huge delay, Turner saw his effort saved.

This only triggered more frustration from the two sides, amid which Brooks and Yusuff both received yellow cards.

However, this seemed to take the sting out of the game, Ainsworth came on for his debut shortly after the controversy, replacing Baggie after 61 minutes.

Robinson had a chance via a free-kick just outside of the box for Weymouth, but he hit it over the wall and over the bar.

However, Tonbridge were able to equalise from the spot after 83 minutes.

Amid a goalmouth scramble another penalty was given to the Angels, and after the first had to be retaken due to encroachment, Yusuff fired in past Ward to seal a draw for the hosts.
