Recap
Weymouth hit late on in Stones thriller
WEYMOUTH 3
Odubade 7, Baggie 62, Williams 66
WEALDSTONE 4
Lewis 19, Lafayette 42, 54, 89
A ROSS Lafayette hat-trick broke Weymouth hearts as the Terras succumbed to a 4-3 defeat to Wealdstone in the Vanarama National League South.
A mad second half saw four goals and a lot of fiery challenges, but Lafayette’s treble did the damage despite the Terras dominating the second half.
Goals from Yemi Odubade, Brett Williams and Abdulai Baggie had seen the two sides drawing 3-3 before Lafayette’s 89th-minute goal.
Williams was initially named on the bench, but he replaced Ben Thomson shortly before the match began.
The Stones were the first to threaten, with a well-struck effort from outside the box by Dennon Lewis having to be headed away for a corner by Jake McCarthy after five minutes.
Weymouth would take the lead soon after however.
A seemingly innocuous move forward down the left resulted in Ollie Harfield teasing a low ball into the box, from which Odubade was able to stay alert to place a light effort expertly into the corner after eight minutes.
The two teams were well-matched in this opening period, albeit with Weymouth threatening more with the chances they could create.
Andy Robinson was the next to test Wealdstone goalkeeper Aston Oxborough, having a low effort from outside the box denied.
Yet the Stones would be level not long later.
A ball over the top from Billy Clifford was latched onto by Lewis, who controlled well and fired past Callum Ward in the Weymouth goal.
Weymouth then had to be alert to not concede again, with the Stones on top in the immediate aftermath of their equaliser.
There was very audible frustration from the stands at this point, but the home supporters were relieved to see Jacob Mendy’s dangerous ball roll harmlessly across the box and out of play.
Yet Weymouth recovered to start creating chances at the visitors’ end, as Baggie stung the palms of Oxborough from distance.
The half became a very quiet affair, with neither side doing much until the closing stages.
Firstly, Michee Efete produced a brilliant save from Weymouth’s Ward, with a superb effort from distance palmed away for a corner.
However, from that corner Lafayette was able to slot in after 41 minutes.
The half ended with both teams arguably deserving the lead, but Wealdstone were clinical enough to take the advantage into the break.
The second half started with Weymouth well on top for the first seven minutes, with Wakefield producing a great run down the left, but saw his effort from close range saved.
Against the run of play, the Stones extended their lead.
It was the run from Jacob Mendy that did the damage, breaking through the defence and teeing up Lafayette for a deflected strike into the net.
Wealdstone were getting an awful lot of value for money down their left, and it was understandable when Buckley was taken off for Murray.
Goalscorer Lafayette was then booked for a dive before the game roared to life.
Baggie tapped in from close range to a massive roar from the home fans, who immediately believed that their side could get another goal.
It came moments later, when Robinson was brought down inside the box to hand the home side a penalty.
Williams, after a delay, walked up to the spot and slammed the ball home.
There would be yet more drama however.
Baggie was brought down when breaking away on the halfway line by Nick Arnold.
Both teams were incensed, and confronted each other after the challenge, but no further cards were issued.
The home fans were becoming extremely vocal, the home side were reacting to it, and began dominating the match.
Yet the home side were unable to make the most of this spell, and paid the price when Lafayette slotted in to condemn Weymouth to defeat..
