It’s All Too Mutch For The Terras
Weymouth Reserves striker Carl Mutch helped condemn his side to a pre-season friendly defeat against Weymouth Sports at the Wessex Stadium.
The afternoon began with the talented-Dorset county youth player leading a potent Terras front-line that also included the impressive-looking Mark Fitch. However, late in the contest, Mutch came on as a guest substitute for the visitors and ending up netting a crucial 79th minute goal.
Following a bright opening period from both teams, it was the Terras who broke the deadlock on 24 minutes. Kyle Critchell was crudely taken down in his stride and up stepped Danny Cullen to fire the free-Kick beyond Robbie Marquis.
Not to be deterred Sports responded in emphatic style on 29 minutes. In a sweeping attack down left flank the evergreen Jason Forbes picked out the on-rushing Darren Tizard who side-footed into the net at the second attempt following Paul Gadsby’s point-blank save.
On the stroke of half-time Fitch was threaded through and then pulled down unceremoniously by Darren Garbutt, but the former Portland man picked himself up to rifle home the resultant penalty kick.
Forbes made the most of some hesitant Terras defending in the 56th minute and strode purposefully towards the advancing Gadsby before finishing in style at the near post.
Then came that bizarre twist 11 minutes from the end when Mutch prodded in a loose ball following a melee in the Terras box.
On 85 minutes, Scott Dennis got the verdict when he was hauled down in the area, giving Fitch the opportunity to notch his second penalty of the game.
But then in the very last minute, war-horse Gerry De La Planque rolled back the years with a spectacular looping lob from 25 yards which gave Adie Chance’s Sports outfit victory in what was an entertaining warm-up encounter.
