DEFENDER Ashley Wells admitted it has been “difficult” watching the Terras struggle from the bench in recent weeks, but is confident the squad can respond.
The popular Terra put in a strong performance when he was propelled back into the starting XI during the 1-0 Red Insure Cup third round defeat against Paulton Rovers on Tuesday.
Wells’ display was “one of the only plus points to come out of the game” according to player-manager Jason Matthews, with the Terras’ boss also claiming the full-back “staked his claim very well” ahead of today’s crunch clash at struggling Histon (3pm).
Reacting to Matthews’ praise, Wells told Echosport: “It’s nice to hear when you haven’t played and you are trying to get back into the team, it’s good to know that the manager has been impressed with you.
“I thought I did well and staked my claim for today’s game but, the performance as a whole, wasn’t up to the high standards we set.”
On his spell out of the side before Tuesday, Wells added: “It’s difficult not being in the team and it’s horrible when you have to travel away and you aren’t getting a look in but that’s what you have to do if you want to be part of a successful team.
“You have to be willing to have your spell on the bench and the lads that are playing know there are people waiting in the wings to come in and do a job.
“Everyone wants to make an impact and I am no different, I want to be playing and helping the team.
“Watching the performances when we are not quite gelling and clicking is difficult and, obviously, not getting on makes it that much harder because you can’t do anything to try and help the team out.”
Wells also gave his view on the negative reaction from the Terras’ fans after last Saturday’s home defeat against Hitchin.
He added: “We have the best fans in the league, they are incredible and they have every right to be like that.
They have stuck by the club for so many years.
“They pay their money and they are entitled to say what they think. They are passionate and they are not going to accept things that are below par.
“Working in town and seeing everyone, it’s kind of hard to take, especially when I’m not playing as well. I can’t do anything to rectify it.”
But the former Portland United man has full faith in the club to turn things around, starting with today’s test against the Stutes.
“I don’t want to talk about negative results, I want to be positive,” he said.

“If you look at a lot of the teams that have gone up, like Truro last year, they just had a run, went in under the radar and we are good enough to do that.
“We have the squad and we believe we can put a run together.”
