JASON Matthews is quite literally looking to defy the odds this term as the Terras kick off their campaign at Biggleswade Town tomorrow (3pm).
Betting prices for clubs to lift the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division title were released by some leading bookmakers this week, with Weymouth listed between 12-1 and 16-1.
Basingstoke Town are the hot favourites to claim the prize priced around 11-2, with Hayes & Yeading, Kettering, Redditch and Leamington also fancied to push for the crown.
But despite his side being slightly lower down the bookies’ pecking order, Matthews is not too worried, and is going into the Terras’ season opener with the Waders in high spirits.
He told Echosport: “The bookies have obviously looked at where we have finished in the last couple of seasons but this is the best prepared we have been since I have been in charge.
“Now, everything seems to be moving in the right direction as a football club and I am really looking forward to getting going.
“I feel we have the squad that can do a job this year.”
Looking ahead to Biggleswade, in which full-back Ashley Wells is a doubt with a knee injury and striker Ben Thomson in unavailable, the player-manager added: “Now it is business time and I can’t wait to go to Biggleswade, which will be an incredibly tough game.
“They have an experienced manager in Chris Nunn who is really good and I am looking forward to pitting my wits against him again.”
