BOSS Jason Matthews believes he has “proved a few of the doubters wrong” following positive results for the Terras over the Bank Holiday weekend.
The Weymouth player-manager, who was under fire following back-to-back 2-0 defeats against Frome Town and St Neots Town this time last week, rallied his troops to take a hard-earned point at Chesham and followed it up with a 2-1 victory over Dorchester Town at home on Monday.
Matthews made some tough decisions over the two fixtures, including the call to drop himself in place of keeper Dan Thomas.
The addition of central-defender Stephane Zubar has also proved an initial success.
Speaking to Echosport following the Ridgeway derby, Matthews said: “I can definitely have an easier week than on my holiday last week.
“I think four points is a good return for the weekend. Chesham is very much a bogey ground for us and they are incredibly difficult to beat on their own patch. I felt it was a really good point on Saturday and we built on that.
“Dorchester threw everything at us on Monday and credit to them but I felt the only way they were going to break us down was through a set-piece. I thought the boys defended magnificently.
“It was a typical derby with a little bit of everything and some great goals in fairness.
“I said to the lads before the game to not be scared to have a shot. It is a derby and passions run high. There were three great strikes in it.”
Looking ahead, Matthews added: “Let’s get a few of these tougher games out of the way and, if we are still in touch, I fancy us.
“It’s a marathon not a sprint. We have a squad and I have altered it a little bit, all I would ask is that I am just given a little bit of time to mould it to what I want it to be.
“It’s about us gelling together as a team and I know we need to do it quickly, otherwise people will turn. I feel over the weekend we have had two incredibly tough games and we have proved a few of the doubters wrong.
“They can come for me as much as they want. I feel that if I was failing I would walk away from the club but I don’t feel that I am.”
Both Charlie Davis and Chris Shephard picked up hamstring injuries on Monday – the latter had to be helped off in the second half.
Matthews added: “We will monitor them this week, they will be in with Lloyd (Beals, club physio) on Thursday.
“We are also seeing a slight improvement in Dean Evans (knee) and there is an outside chance of him being fit for the weekend.”
