Brandon Goodship blasts in for Weymouth glory

M Landricombe 23

McCarthy 68, Goodship 90+1

BRANDON Goodship rifled home a shot in injury time to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory in a top-of-the-table clash at Tiverton Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South.

The Terras fell behind to Michael Landricombe’s first-half header but saw a second-half resurgence that saw them claim the win after an initial equaliser from Jake McCarthy.

It was the seventh match so far this season that Weymouth have conceded first in their 11 league games, yet the Terras are unbeaten in those seven and the run was not to end at Tiverton.

Weymouth could boast the return of Callum Buckley to the bench, while Harry Baker’s suspension is yet to kick in so he also made the bench.

It was a cagey start to the match with no real chances in the first 10 minutes, as both sides tried to feel their way into the game.

Abdulai Baggie claimed the first real chance when his long-range strike had to be turned behind by Tiverton goalkeeper Liam Armstrong.

Baggie had another strike from distance three minutes later, but this time it sailed wide of the Tiverton post.

The game was beginning to heat up as Josh Key and Jordan Rogers helped the ball to Harrison Davis, whose shot was comfortably claimed by Weymouth goalkeeper Jordan Seabright.

Moments later Tom Bath earned a free-kick which was swung in but Tiverton captain Jamie Price’s header was straight at Seabright.

Josh Carmichael then sent a 25-yard free-kick over the Tiverton bar after 19 minutes.

However, it was Tivvy who got the breakthrough when Key swung in a cross that saw a bullet header from Landricombe nestle into the net to hand the home side the lead.

The contest went quiet until Josh Wakefield forced Armstrong to tip the ball behind for a corner with a low strike.

Weymouth saved their best chance until the last minute of the half, however.

Firstly, McCarthy had his shot saved by Armstrong before Goodship’s follow-up effort hit the post.

Moments later the referee blew the whistle for half-time as Weymouth ended on a strong note.

Bath then earned a free-kick moments into the second half, but the Terras cleared the ball away.

Weymouth responded with a chance of their own, but no player could get on the end of a great ball in from Calvin Brooks.

Landricombe almost doubled the home side’s lead when a long ball from the left found Landricombe but Seabright made a superb save.

Jordan Rogers then saw a shot deflected wide off Carmichael and out for a corner to the home side.

Chances then began to fall in quick succession, as Armstrong saved from a Goodship effort before claiming a Wakefield attempt from the edge of the area.

At the other end Bath then put a great ball in but no Yellow could get on the end of it.

Key then put in a good cross which was not cleared well by Stephane Zubar, and moments later Price nodded a Davis cross towards goal but it was an easy save for Seabright.

The Terras got their equaliser and it was through captain McCarthy, who rifled the ball in from 20 yards out.

Zubar then ran from the Terras’ half to unleash a shot that flew wide.

Weymouth were now well on top heading into the closing stages of the match, and almost got a late winner when McCarthy saw his shot superbly tipped onto the bar by Armstrong.

Yet a winner Weymouth would get, as after a minute of injury time Goodship slammed in to hand the Terras a potentially massive three points.
