BEN Thomson cheerily said “you cannot beat an 87th-minute winner”, as his late goal handed all three points to Weymouth in a 2-1 win over Salisbury in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South.

The Terras had to recover from an early Aaron Dawson goal, and losing goalkeeper Jordan Seabright to injury, but the second half saw Thomson earn a penalty, which Brandon Goodship dispatched, before Thomson’s late winner.

Thomson said: “You can’t beat an 87th minute winner.”

A crowd of 1,006 was more than double that the next highest attendance in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South, and five times that of the third-biggest attendance.

Thomson praised Salisbury for their performance but said it was good to see the side still hunting for a goal late on, with it paying off handsomely with the winner.

Thomson said: “It was a great win, they are a tough side but we kept plugging away and obviously it paid dividends at the end, so it’s good to get a win and a big crowd.

“We never normally go two games without a win so we have got it in us to bounce back and obviously that is what we have done.”

The game saw Seabright come off injured early on, with Lloyd Thomas replacing him for his league debut, and earned praise from Thomson for his performance.

Thomson, when asked how it was to regroup after the injury, said: “It was fine, we train with Lloyd every week, he is a good keeper. We know he is ready.

“I think Jordan has got a broken nose and he has got concussion but he is alright apparently so it is good.

“Lloyd did well when he came in and he has stepped up.”

Discussing the penalty that Thomson won early in the second half, which came from a challenge while Thomson was taking a shot, which subsequently went over the bar, Thomson said: “It could have gone either way the penalty, but if it was in the centre of midfield it would have been a foul.”
