Match Preview: Yeovil Town v Weymouth – Saturday 16th October 2021 – 15:00

By Ted Slocombe

It’s derby day this Saturday in a crucial FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round tie, as The Terras look to defeat The Glovers to book a spot in the Round 1 proper at Huish Park. This fixture is the first meeting between these two sides, with fans, in cup competition since 1999, making this one of the blockbuster match-ups of this weekend’s FA Cup ties.

THE TERRAS

Brian Stock’s Terras side come into the game without a win in seven league matches, meaning this cup tie could present the perfect opportunity for the team to rejuvenate and bounce back in dramatic style. The gaffer will be looking for his team to be positive in attack to try and convert more chances in front of goal in crucial moments of the game, which has been lacking in recent times. However, following the Halifax game, Stock was pleased with the attitude of the players throughout the match and believe the team is close to winning matches again if the team can stick together. Speaking about Saturday’s derby match, the gaffer said “We all know how big a game this is for the club and especially the supporters, who we will need heading into the game which is an exciting prospect and one in which we need a put on a good performance to go on and win”.

Player To Watch: Omar Mussa

One of the standout players in last week’s defeat to Halifax but also this season with his work and ability on and off the ball and came close to scoring for The Terras with a well taken strike on Saturday. With the midfield battle likely to be a crucial element in the game on Saturday at Yeovil, Omar will be looking to work some of his magic on the ball to wriggle out of tight situations and create chances in attack for his fellow teammates.

THE GLOVERS

Darren Sarll’s side come into the derby with no win in their previous five matches only scoring two goals. They have picked up three wins out of nine matches played so far this season with notable victories including an away 3-0 win over Stockport County and a 1-0 win over FC Halifax Town at Huish Park, two teams in which the Terras fell to defeat against recently. Despite sitting midtable, the Glovers have demonstrated their ability to break down some of the league’s tougher sides this season and cause problems in attack, something the Terras will need to be mindful of.

Player To Watch: Joe Quigley

The main dangerman for The Glovers so far this season scoring six goals in Yeovil’s nine matches. The forward will be eager to add to his tally for the season to help the Glovers reach the first round of the FA Cup and to break their current winless run.

Last season, the Glovers were victorious in both matches against The Terras in the National League. At the Bob Lucas Stadium in January 2021, Yeovil came out 3-0 winners against 10-man Weymouth. The reverse fixture in February saw Yeovil defeat Weymouth at Huish Park 3-1 with Jacob Mensah on the scoresheet for the Terras that day. The last time the two met in cup competition was 1999, in an FA Trophy 2nd Round tie which ended in a 0-0 draw at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

FINAL WORD

A massive game for both sides this Saturday for a chance to reach the FA Cup 1st Round proper. But for Weymouth, this is a chance to put recent wrongs right and to come out of the game with not only a strong performance to take back into the league campaign, but with a win, a place in the first round and bragging rights over the Glovers.
