Match Preview: Weymouth v Wealdstone – Saturday 23rd October 2021 – 15:00

By Ted Slocombe

The Terras return to league action as they face Wealdstone at the Bob Lucas Stadium in the Vanarama National League on Saturday.

THE TERRAS

It was late heartbreak for the Terras as they exited the FA Cup on Tuesday night in the replay against rivals Yeovil Town on penalties. Despite the loss, the performance from the players was of a very high quality throughout both games against Yeovil and this was highlighted by manager Brian Stock following Tuesday’s game. The gaffer said: “We couldn’t have asked for anything more from every single individual…we need to focus on the positives because there was a lot of heart and desire, we look fit and strong and that’s going to put us in good stead for the rest of the season.

Given the level of performance, fight and attitude of the players in the previous games, Brian Stock and the players will be fully confident that they can get back to winning ways in the league campaign, to make ground with the rest of the teams in the league, starting with Wealdstone on Saturday.

Player to Watch: Ben Thomson

Our long-serving striker made a great impact for the Terras as he started against Yeovil. His interplay and runs in behind the defence allowed him to create good opportunities for himself and his fellow teammates. Extremely unlucky not to score against Yeovil, Ben Thomson will be hoping that he can replicate his work rate from the game and get his first goals of the season on Saturday.

LAST SIX

TERRAS 1-1 YEOVIL (1-2p) (FA CUP REPLAY)

YEOVIL 1-1 TERRAS (FA CUP)

FC HALIFAX TOWN 2-0 TERRAS

BROMLEY 3-0 TERRAS

TERRAS 1-2 STOCKPORT COUNTY

BARNET 3-1 TERRAS

Weymouth currently sit 21st in the National League table with 8 points.

THE STONES

Saturday’s visitors Wealdstone have begun the season with two wins from their opening eleven fixtures. The two victories saw The Stones defeat Altrincham by a goal to nil and Kings Lynn Town by a goal to nil, both in September. Wealdstone haven’t won in their previous four matches however they have held top sides to draws in their opening fixtures. Both Dagenham and Redbridge and Solihull Moors have had to settle with a point against The Stones, so Brian Stock’s side will have to be cautious but confident to pick up three points on Saturday.

Player To Watch: Josh Umerah

Josh Umerah has picked up six goals for The Stones so far this season including a double against Notts County in September. The Terras defence will have to be on top form to be able to prevent Umerah from having opportunities in front of goal as he is likely to be the man that the Stones may look for to find goals in the game on Saturday.

WEALDSTONE 1-2 EASTLEIGH

WEALDSTONE 0-0 SOLIHULL MOORS

TORQUAY UNITED 5-0 WEALDSTONE

Wealdstone currently sit 16th in the National League table with 10 points.

HEAD TO HEAD

Last season, The Terras lost 2-1 away to Wealdstone in December 2020 with Ben Thomson scoring the goal for Weymouth in that game. In the reverse fixture in March 2021, it was a comfortable 4-0 thrashing by The Terras at the Bob Lucas Stadium. Goals came from skipper Josh McQuoid, Brennan Camp and a double from Sean Shields.

FINAL WORD

Saturday presents a great opportunity for the Terras to get back to winning ways in the league against a side with similar fortunes so far in the league. Given the performance against Yeovil, Brian Stock and his team will be full of confidence as The Terras look to get the three points to push Weymouth up the league table.
