Match Preview: Weymouth v Bromley – Tuesday 22nd February – 19:45
Promotion chasing Bromley travel to Dorset to face David Oldfield’s Terras under the lights at the Bob Lucas Stadium this evening.
THE TERRAS
The first win of the David Oldfield era came last Tuesday evening against Eastleigh, as Brandon Goodship’s second half strike secured a very important three points – something in which the Terras have deserved for their performances of late. However, the team cannot dwell on this for too long, with a tough run of fixtures upon us. With Saturday’s match against Altrincham postponed after Storm Eunice hit the UK, David Oldfield’s men will have to use the extra rest and the gaffer will be rallying his team to build on the win last week and pick up points to close the gap between themselves and safety, beginning tonight.
The thoughts of manager David Oldfield ahead of tonight’s game:
“Another big challenge for us with the match against Bromley. They are having a great season, are very competitive and we will learn more about our group.
The preparations have been fine, albeit windy! – with the weekend match called off for the storm, we are looking forward to the opportunity ahead. The players showed good character to get a win last week but we need to make sure we are ready and willing to work, for a very difficult match ahead.”

THE RAVENS
Andy Woodman’s Bromley currently sit fifth in the National League with 15 wins from the 27 games they have played so far and currently occupy a play-off position. They travel to Dorset having won five of their twelve away league matches this season. Bromley have recorded four wins in their previous six league matches, plus wins over Aldershot Town and Tonbridge Angels (penalties) in the FA Trophy during this time. However the Ravens fell to defeat against Stockport County and Southend United in their previous two league matches, ending their four game winning run in the league, five games unbeaten in all competitions. A sticky patch perhaps for Andy Woodman’s side, something in which the Terras may want to take advantage of, but will be fully aware of the quality that Bromley bring, as they look to strengthen their promotion hopes.
Player To Watch: Michael Cheek
30 year old striker Michael Cheek has scored fifteen league goals for Bromley this season, making him the second highest scorer in the National League behind Chesterfield’s Tshimanga. Alongside a very dangerous front line for the Ravens, Cheek will be hoping to get back on the scoresheet, having not scored since Bromley’s win over Solihull Moors in the beginning of January.

Re-Penge?
Six games and just the one win with five loses against the next-to-Penge-based-outfit but at least our one triumph was just last season at this very venue. On that occasion we stormed into a two-goal lead within just seven minutes, the fastest time we have scored twice in a game since an FA Cup qualifying game at Mangotsfield United in 2014 when we went 2-0 up in just three minutes!
Our visit to Kent last season was a barnstorming “devil-may-care” affair with a rare Wakefield goal and a Whelan penalty won by Cooke but we travelled back west with nothing to show for our valiant efforts in a 2-3 defeat.
Waving the (Lily)white flag
If that was a close game then our most recent certainly was not, a 0-3 loss away with Bromley two goals to the good by the break. Similarly our two meetings before last season were two defeats in the Conference South in 2009-10 as a 1-5 home defeat was followed by a 0-4 defeat at Hayes Lane.
The home game was notable in that it witnessed the second return of prodigal son Steve Claridge as a player, turning out for the club for one last time at nearly the age of 43 ½! He did seem to inspire the players as we actually took the lead in that game after 85 seconds with former Bromley man David Obaze slashing home. But Claridge’s appearance, 24 years and 3 days after his first competitive debut, failed to inspire the troops further and we fell to defeat.
Our first ever match up against the Lilywhites was a 0-1 loss in the third qualifying round away in the FA Trophy in 1991, which was no disgrace as they were one level higher at the time, playing their trade in the Isthmian Premier when we were playing in the Southern league southern division.
