WEYMOUTH favourite Ashley Wells insisted he would like to remain as part of the club’s set-up next season and has backed manager Jason Matthews to take the club forward.
The defender, who is expected to be in the Terras’ squad for today’s away clash at Dunstable Town (3pm), did however claim the playing squad are fully aware that they have “underachieved massively” this season.
Asked whether he would consider Weymouth as an option for next term, Wells, who is in his fifth year with the Terras, replied: “Yeah, definitely.
“If they wanted to keep me then we would definitely try to make it happen.
“I want to play as high as possible but, again, I want to be successful with my home town.”
He added: “If you look at our team, our squad is very good. We have underachieved massively and we all know that.
“Some games we are getting booed and rightfully, we should have been, but I think we can kick on.”
Commenting on manager Matthews, Wells added: “Jase is getting a lot of criticism and so are the coaching staff, which is unfair because it’s us that aren’t doing it. He can only pick 11 players and send us out here.
“I think he is the right man to take us forward.
“He wants us to play and he has set his squad up to be a good footballing team, we aren’t one of those teams that just try to kick it and run, we try to open teams up and play.
“That’s the reason a lot of the players are here, they believe in the philosophy.”
