Josh McQuoid brilliance in Weymouth fight back
WEYMOUTH 2
POOLE TOWN 1
JOSH McQuoid curled in a brilliant winner to complete a second-half comeback for Weymouth as they beat Poole Town 2-1.
Ex-Terra Josh Carmichael handed the Dolphins a lead early on in the second half, but goals from Stephane Zubar and McQuoid completed the fight back.
The first 20 minutes proved a defensive examination for the Terras, yet one they largely passed, with few chances heading the way of the Dolphins.
Claudio Herbert had an early shot go high of the Weymouth bar, while a teasing free-kick was nodded wide of the post, but Poole did not make their possession count.
Brett Williams was proving a useful link up option for the Terras early on and had a promising attack of his own.
He burst forward on a long run before reaching the box but fired wide.
An Ollie Harfield free-kick caused problems when Poole goalkeeper Luke Cairney spilled the ball but the glovesman collected at the second attempt.
The first-half was dominated by tempers flaring in three separate incidents, which saw Ben Thomson, Williams and Poole’s Flavio Tavares receive yellow cards.
Abdulai Baggie slammed a promising cross from McQuoid against a defender, while Poole’s Herbert needed his shot from a rebounded free-kick to be put over the bar by Zubar in the best chances of the half.
The second half would not need long to get going however, as Poole soon took the lead.
Carmichael struck a sweet 30-yard free-kick which crashed into the post and into the net, with no subsequent celebration.
McQuoid almost replied instantly when he burst forward before lashing a shot over the bar from eight yards out.
Yet the Terras would have their equaliser, when Calvin Brooks crossed in deep, which was met by a superb header from Zubar at the near post.
Weymouth dominated the late stages of the match, and got a deserved winner through McQuoid in spectacular fashion.
Centrally from 22-yards out, he curled a brilliant effort beyond the outstretched palms of substitute goalkeeper Harry Phillips.
