Today is the Goalkeepers turn; there are five below to pick from, some even come with an added goal threat! Choose wisely!
Peter Guthrie
Guthrie was born in Newcastle on 10th October 1961. He had played for Wickham and Blyth Spartans (1986-87). Originally a striker he converted to a goalkeeper whilst at Blyth.
He joined Weymouth on a contract worth £160 a week – in July 1987 – and moved on to Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth £100000 in December 1987.
Whilst at Spurs Guthrie failed to find favour with the resident goalkeeping coach, Ray Clemence, and went to Swansea on loan (1988: 14apps). On his release from Spurs he joined Barnet in 1989 and mad 18 appearances before joining Bournemouth for the 1990-91 season. At Dean Court he made 10 appearances.
In 1991 he moved to play in Hong Kong for Sing Tao, returning to Newcastle in 1993 and assisting Gateshead (1993-94: 8apps) and Whitley Bay before going back to appear for Hong Kong Rangers (1994-97) and Happy Valley (19997-2001), as well as representing the Hong Kong League, before returning to his native North East and finishing his playing career with two spells at Bedlington Terriers (2002-03 & 2005-06)
On his return from Hong Kong he found employment at Newcastle Airport, leaving to become a coach driver.
He made 41 appearances for the club.
Jason Matthews
Born on 13 March 1975 in Paulton, Somerset. He won a place at Millfield School of Excellence and then signed schoolboy terms with Bristol Rovers, sadly being released shortly before leaving school.
He then spent some years playing at non-league level for Welton Rovers, Paulton Rovers and Mangotsfield United before signing for Salisbury City.
In 1998-99 he signed for Nuneaton Borough before he was invited to join Exeter City, where he made 12 appearances in 1999-2000, keeping a clean sheet against Everton in the FA Cup.
In 2000-01 he made 31 appearances for Aberystwyth Town and joined Clevedon Town for the 2001-02 season, coming to Weymouth at the beginning of the 2002-2003 season.
As a goalkeeper his performances in that troubled season had a tremendous effect on the Terras’ staying in the Premier Division.
He won the Players’ Player of the Year, Supporters Player of the Year and Away Supporters Player of the Year for the 2002-2003 season and also the Player of the Year award in 2006-07.
Matthews was selected to tour Tanzania and Zanzibar with Middlesex Wanderers at the conclusion of the 2006-07 season.
On 17 March 2007, he scored his first ever career goal for Weymouth in a Conference National match against Southport.
Having fought of yet another challenge to his position, in the form of Jon Stewart, Matthews continued as Terras No. 1 until the arrival of John Hollins. Hollins took the (surprise) decision to release Matthews, who immediately signed for Eastleigh. He was released by Eastleigh at the end of the 2010-11 season and linked up with Bath City.
In 2012-13 he joined Dorchester, but left at the end of the season and returned to Weymouth – chalking up his 300th appearance in October 2013.
When Brendon King was dismissed in December 2013, Matthews became caretaker manager, agreeing to take the player-manager role in January 2014.
Paul Myers
Myers joined Weymouth in 1995 making his debut on 20th September 1995 in an away league fixture at Havant.
He had previously played for Cogenhoe, Kettering Town, Northampton and Cambridge City.
He left Weymouth at the end of the 1998-99 season to join Salisbury City.
Whilst at Weymouth he won the Player of the Year, Players Player of the Year and Away Player of the Year trophies, all in 1996-97.
He totaled 210 appearances, including his appearance (as a guest substitute) on 8th May 2003 in David Laws’ testimonial. Myers later played for Portland United and Dorchester Town.
Danny Potter
Danny was born on 18 March 1979 in Ipswich and started his career as a trainee at Chelsea, but after failing to make the grade there he spent time with Colchester United (1997-98), Exeter City (1998-2000: 10apps) Weymouth (loan – Nov. 1999) Chelmsford City (2000) and Weymouth (2000-2002).
Whilst at Weymouth – in 2002 Potter appeared in Sky One’s Dream Team, playing as himself, for fictional club Harchester United.
He came to prominence when he joined Canvey Island in March 2003 and stayed until, after Canvey dropped out of the Conference in 2006, making 112 appearances. He was signed by Stevenage Borough for the 2006-07 season – 3 apps – moving to Cambridge United on 22 May 2007.
Following the conclusion of the 2009–10 season, Potter was released after playing 114 games. He joined Torquay United on 1 July 2010 where he made 9 appearances before joining Newport County on 29 May 2011. After playing 16 times Potter was released by Newport in March 2012.
On 12 March 2012 Potter was signed by Staines Town. Three months later Potter – after 9 games – signed for Eastbourne Borough. However he left Eastbourne by mutual consent after playing seven games, due to changes in his personal life which made it difficult for him to continue playing for the club.
After leaving Eastbourne Potter joined Leiston in the Ryman League in 2012 and played 7 times, but rejoined Eastbourne later in the same season making a further 16 appearances before he retired from football after finishing the 12/13 season at Eastbourne.
He made 108 appearances in the Weymouth goalkeeper’s jersey.
Mark Travers
Mark Travers joined Weymouth on loan from AFC Bournemouth at the start of the 2017/18.
Travers scored the winning goal on his debut at Bishops Stortford in August 2017. After a spell of impressive performances, Travers was recalled by AFC Bournemouth in January 2018.
He went on to make his debut against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at the end of the 2018/19, where he kept a clean sheet and won the man of the match award.
Travers was awarded a cap by Ireland for the first time last month.
