Match Preview: St Albans City (A) – Tuesday 8th November 2022 – 19:45

The Terras are back in league action after a fantastic FA Cup showing at the weekend, the question being once again, can Weymouth immediately now turn FA Cup form to league form.

 

Manager Bobby Wilkinson gave his thoughts ahead of today’s game:

On preparations: “Everything went really well. I’ve been very pleased with our attitude, we know after the performance on Saturday that’s there’s no excuses now, we must turn cup form into league form. We have to take momentum, energy, bravery into the game and as a group, we must start performing well.”

On the challenge that St Albans could bring: “We’ve watched them twice, they’re a team in great form. Usually setting up as a 3-4-3 playing some great football, but saw them the second time lining up differently so we know they can change systems. Their interim manager has got them playing well, so we’re certainly up against a good side. But I don’t care who we’re playing, we need to be turning up like we have against Wimbledon, Welling, Havant. We need to turn up and be counted, we could be in for some tricky conditions, but we will take the buzz and momentum from Saturday into it, let’s go there and pick up points.”

On team news: “Nathan might miss out tonight with an ankle problem. Tom Blair is suspended. Means we will probably have to make a few changes in order to freshen the side up a bit after the boys worked so hard on Saturday.”

Ironically, we have faced St. Albans on a “score” of occasions but a “score draw” appears unlikely based on previous encounters, as our sides only left the pitch even-stevens twice in twenty meetings, with ten wins for Weymouth and eight for our hosts.
Our last match was a 0-1 loss in our 2019/20 National League South promotion campaign, ending a four game unbeaten run against The Saints that included an FA Trophy replay win in 2018, when St. Albans were higher up the football pyramid.
The only survivor in our squad from the last season we faced the Hertfordshire outfit is Cameron Murray, who played in two of the three games in that campaign – missing the league loss at home, but featuring in the 4-1 home win in the FA Cup qualifying rounds as well as the away victory of the same scoreline when he bagged an assist.
In terms of players who have featured for both sides – our recent signing Josh Oyinsan played for St. Albans in November 2019, but apparently featured just the once in a Herts County Cup tie. As for those who have since departed for pastures new – Sean Shields is probably the most notable name for both sets of fans following his recent exploits for the Dorset side and his three year tenure in Hertfordshire back in 2010-13.
