Goals from David Sesay and Ahkeem Rose ensured the Terras ended their winless run at home by seeing off Hampton and Richmond Borough 2-1 last night at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
The Terras looked to be on the front foot in the opening moments as they dealt with pressure from the Beavers well before turning defence into attack through Tom Blair. The winger bolted it down the left flank before his low cross was put behind for a corner. Blair took the corner which was headed goal bound by Rose but hooked away before it could go in.
Tom Blair looked devastating on the near side of the pitch, and was the catalyst for Weymouth’s opener in the 9th minute. The winger fizzed in a low ball across the face of the box which fell to David Sesay. Weymouth’s number 8 took the shot on first time but Alan Julian matched the shot with a strong save, only for the ball to come back out to Sesay, who fired home the chance with his second effort.
The Beavers looked to come back into the game immediately as they send the ball long up the pitch. The ball was stood up in the penalty area for Tommy Wood. The striker guided the ball with a downwards header, but the ball went inches wide of Oualah’s post.
Five minutes later and the Terras were unlucky not to double their lead, had it not been for a superb fingertip save from Julian. Blair whipped a dead ball into the area which was met by the head of Nathan Carlyle, who sent the looping header goal bound. Julian tipped the ball onto the bar.
Possession was all Weymouth, with the Terras finding themselves 2 on 1 in the 18th minute. Great passing movement saw Rose poke the ball through to Ash on the halfway line. Ash got past his marking defender to break away in front of goal. With Rose in support, Ash squared the ball across the face of goal to allow Rose a tap in, but there was too much on the pass meaning that Rose couldn’t make a connection, with the shot going wide.
It seemed astounding that Weymouth weren’t more than a goal to the good at the break, but made amends for that immediately after half time, taking their first chance of the second half. Blair’s deep corner in the 47th minute was met at the back post by Rose, whose header couldn’t be kept out by Julian. Weymouth led 2-0.
In the 52nd minute, the two combined for another corner routine, but this time, Rose’s back post header was cleared off the line by Beavers defender, Tommy Davis.
Hampton and Richmond got themselves back into the game in the 55th minute as Tommy Wood tapped in a low cross from Connor Kurran-Brown.
A minute later, Kurran-Brown cut in from the left to take a shot at his near post, but Zaki Oualah was alert to the danger and got down well to his right to make the save.
Terras fans hearts were in mouths in the 65th minute as they thought their team had conceded the equaliser. A loose ball found its way into the area and to the feet of Jake Gray, who, yards from goal had an open net. Gray took the strike on first time but the ball ended up on the golf course allowing Terras fans a chance to breathe.
The Terras players defended well in the final moments and saw out any pressure from the Beavers to claim the deserved win.
