Weymouth bag last-four Senior Cup spot |
WEYMOUTH overcame a spirited Hamworthy Recreation outfit to advance into the semi-finals of the Dorset Senior Cup.An Adam Kelly penalty along with goals from Conor Jevon and Chris McPhee proved enough for the home side, who rested a number of key men on the night.
Rec goalkeeper Andy Knights has fond memories of the Bob Lucas Stadium, when Hamworthy overcame Portland United on penalties in the Dorset Premier League Cup final last season, with the Magna Road gloveman finding the net with the winning spot-kick in a penalty shoot-out. But the Hamworthy stopper knew he was in for a fairly busy evening this time around as Weymouth camped in the away side’s half early on, and it only took the Terras seven minutes to get their noses in front. A low drive from Kelly, back in the side after being left out on Saturday, cannoned off a post into the path of frontman Jevon to tap home from close range. The Dorset Premier League outfit then tried to respond just short of the quarter of an hour mark when Jamie Moores’ jinking run was unchallenged and he unleashed a fierce strike which whistled narrowly over the crossbar. But any respite for Rec was short-lived as the home side then doubled their lead on 19 minutes, Kelly caused problems once again as he went down under the challenge of Jamie Beamish to earn his second penalty in the space of four days. He then dusted himself down and slotted the spot-kick home to Knights’ left to make it 2-0. Having been booked, Beamish then thought he was given his marching orders for a second yellow moments later, and even made his way towards the tunnel, but referee Lee Rutter called the defender back and let him off with a stern talking to. Moores then showed his threat once more 10 minutes short of half-time. A searching ball forward saw Sam Purdy find his team-mate, who hit the ball with the outside of his boot, and Joe Prodomo was a bystander in the Terras’ goal as the attempt ricocheted off a post. George Rigg then found acres of space inside the visitors’ area, and his shot on goal was cleared off the line by Aaron Stacey as Weymouth took a commanding 2-0 lead in at the break. Rec showed their desire after the interval as Purdy fired over, but McPhee, in a more advanced role for the contest, then caught the away team cold. He stroked the ball into the net from 25 yards through a number of bodies as an unsighted Knights was left helpless. Moores, who deserved to get on the scoresheet, then capped off a slick Rec move to grab a goal for the visitors three minutes later. A neat one-two with Dan Blackburn saw the Hamworthy man run on to the return pass and lift the ball over Prodomo to make it 3-1. In credit to the visitors, they looked lively in stages during the second period, and could have made it 3-2 on the hour mark. Purdy cut inside and saw his effort blocked on the line and Dominic Falco smashed the rebound into the side-netting. Kelly and McPhee were then replaced for the hosts, most probably with Saturday’s league clash with Banbury in mind as the Terras saw the contest out comfortably. |
