Weymouth’s Buildbase FA Trophy run came to an end as they crashed out to Ramsbottom United in a 3-1 defeat at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Iywrah Gooden’s injury time winner at Ramsbottom on Saturday earned a replay at the Bob Lucas Stadium as the Rams pegged Weymouth back twice.

Goals from Eddie Moran, Jason Carey and an own goal from Sam Sherring meant it was eighth-tier Ramsbottom United who set themselves up for a home tie against AFC Fylde in the last sixteen of the FA Trophy.

As with the first meeting between the two sides last Saturday, Ramsbottom started the brighter side as Iywrah Gooden played in Jason Carey who tested Lloyd Thomas in the second minute.

Two minutes later and Thomas was twice called on again, Gooden again from distance with the first effort, which Thomas pushed out to Eddie Moran, whose rebounded shot was again saved by the Weymouth keeper.

Ten minutes in and Weymouth had their first meaningful attack of the game, the tenacious Ben Thomson found himself some space and bearing down one-on-one on the Ramsbottom goal put his shot over the bar.

Jake McCarthy then had to be on hand to make a big tackle when Jamie Rother looked as though he was about to unleash from range, a challenge which set-up a quick-fire counter attack for the Terras. Yemi Odubade seemed to have assisted Brandon Goodship, but the usually so-clinical striker stumbled at the vital moment.

On 32 minutes the visitors had their dream start to the replay when Sam Sherring inadvertently put Tom Kennedy’s cross into his own net.

But their lead was a short lived one, Yemi Odubade latched on to a ball over the top and one-on-one with Sam Ashton unselfishly squared the ball to Ben Thomson who only had to tap in to equalise for the Terras.

The Rams were eager to regain the lead though, 5 minutes after conceding Gooden hit the post with a curling effort, and fortunately for the Terras, Rother could only put the follow-up over the crossbar.

Minutes later and Ramsbottom had another opportunity to take the lead, Ryan Ellison fired from close range to see his effort blocked on the line, to handball appeals from the Rams.

At half-time the Terras were forced into withdrawing Callum Buckley through injury, Ashley Wells replaced the left-back who had sustained suspected concussion.

Weymouth started the second-half brighter than they had the first, within a minute Calvin Brooks had an opportunity but put his shot over the bar.

It was the Rams who struck first in the second-half, on 54 minutes Moran capitalised on a mix-up in the Terras backline and looped the ball over Thomas to give Ramsbottom the lead for the second time in the tie.

Ramsbottom were in no mood to sit on their one goal lead and looked to instantly double their advantage through Evangelinos, but Thomas did well to block his effort.

Ashton, in the Rams’ goal had to be alert a minute later as he had to stop Josh Wakefield and then quickly after save a shot from Odubade at his near-post.

But the 275-mile journey was to seem so much shorter for the 17 Ramsbottom fans who made the long midweek journey, when Jason Carey put them into a 3-1 lead; his low drilled shot on 79 minutes snuck under the Weymouth keeper to seal the victory.

Although it won’t have spoilt Ramsbottom’s evening, they could have made things worse for the Terras when they won a penalty in injury-time, but Kennedy put the resultant spot-kick high and wide.

Weymouth are back in league action on Saturday when they welcome Kings Langley to the Bob Lucas Stadium (3pm kick-off).
