Matthews’ men are cup heroes

| IT was party time at the Bob Lucas Stadium last night as an emotional Jason Matthews expressed how much it meant to him to lift the Dorset Senior Cup.
Jordan Copp’s second-half spot-kick proved the difference as Weymouth triumphed for the fourth time this season over arch- rivals Dorchester Town, and nobody was more ecstatic than the Terras’ boss. “I was really happy and quite emotional because of how much it meant to me,” he told Echosport. “There were critics flying my way and the boys stepped up and produced for me. “We have unbelievable fans and they mean a lot to me. To repay them with a trophy means a lot and I know how much it means to beat Dorchester.” Looking ahead, the Weymouth chief believes capturing silverware could spur his side on in their quest for a play-off spot. “The play-offs are still in our hands and that’s the main thing but to win a trophy in my full season is unbelievable,” he added. “We have to keep going now and that could be the catalyst for Saturday and I will have the lads revved up.” Speaking further about the win, Copp, who held his nerve to slot the ball home past Magpies’ keeper Alan Walker-Harris, added: “Scoring the winning goal is great but getting the win was massive and the boys were buzzing. “To be fair I have wanted to take penalties all season, I said in the changing room I wanted them before so to score is happy days.” Weymouth skipper Stewart Yetton added: “It’s brilliant, to get the win and get a trophy is always big and hopefully that will be the catalyst now to spur us on and turn our form around.”
