WEYMOUTH’S hat-trick hero Brandon Goodship was full of praise for the Terras’ full-backs after they enjoyed a strong attacking show against Gosport Borough in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.
Goodship got two goals in the first half before rounding off his treble in the second as Weymouth ran out comfortable 5-0 winners.
Goodship said: “I thought our full-backs were brilliant, I thought Wellsy (Ashley Wells) and Buckers (Callum Buckley) got forward really well and contributed to a lot of the attacking play really well and some of the balls they put down the side for us to chase for me, Tommo (Ben Thomson) and Bakes (Harry Baker) were brilliant.
“It enables you to have a bit more of a go and maybe express yourself a bit more.”
Reflecting upon the match, Goodship said: “We played quite well but we can play better than that. Gosport have got some good players and I think we nullified their threat quite well which made it more one-sided than it would have been normally.”
Wells and Buckley enjoyed a lot of space down the wings and were able to go on the attack frequently, with Gosport struggling to hold back the Terras’ attacking efforts.
Goodship said: “Obviously the defenders love defending but when they can attack obviously it is a massive bonus and that is something that every defender wants to do really is join in the attacks so for them to be able to do that on Monday was great.
“I thought they applied themselves brilliantly and they were excellent throughout as they have been the whole season.”
Weymouth scored with their first attack as Baker headed the ball over their goalkeeper Patrick O’Flaherty after just two minutes.
Goodship said: “It settles quite a few nerves and you can relax a bit and play your natural game but I thought we were brilliant throughout. To get that early goal meant quite a lot to the boys.”
The hat-trick from Weymouth’s top goalscorer took him to 33 league goals for the season, and is currently top scorer in the league by seven clear goals.
Goodship said: “At any standard it is good to get a hat-trick and it was no different when the first one went in.
“I think that is when I was happiest because it got me underway and relaxed me a bit because I knew I had a good chance of scoring because of where they are in the table.
“To get three I was delighted, more importantly I was delighted with the result but on a personal level it is always nice to score goals.”
