WEYMOUTH striker Brandon Goodship remains committed to the club but admitted he aims to play at the “highest level” possible.
Before a 6-0 friendly defeat to Bournemouth Under-23s, the Terras’ striker was handed the golden boot by director Pete Saxby following his 38 goals in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.
Goodship’s goals helped Weymouth finish fifth in the league last campaign until a 3-0 play-off semi-final defeat to King’s Lynn put paid to their chances of promotion.
Speaking to Echosport about the prospect of rival clubs sniffing around the striker after his remarkable form, Goodship insisted he took rumours with a “pinch of salt”.
He said: “I’ve heard of a few bits and pieces that have gone on. In football you never really know what’s true until it’s put in front of you on paper.
“You take it with a pinch of salt. I’ve not spoken to anyone, it’s just what you hear on the rumour mill. I just get on with things.
“I want to play at the highest level I can possibly play at. If nothing comes up I’ll give my all for Weymouth like I did last year.”
Commenting on his receipt of the golden boot, Goodship felt the award was as much for his team-mates as himself.
He said: “I couldn’t attend the evening the Southern League put on (to collect it), but it’s a really good award.
“Like I’ve said before, I’m delighted to have it and it’s one I wouldn’t have without my team-mates. It’s any award for everyone rather than just for me.
“If I get in the right position and get the chances I always back myself to score. Hopefully I get it again, but the team comes first.
“I’d much rather win the league and not win the golden boot.”
Asked if winning the league was in his sights, Goodship added: “It’s got to be. Finishing fifth with 97 points last year, the only progression on that is to win the league or promotion.
“It has to be at the forefront of everyone’s minds.”
With pre-season firmly underway, Goodship praised Weymouth’s professionalism during the summer – a key trait of manager Mark Molesley’s regime.
He said: “We all got given our own performance plans to stay in shape and work on a few things. We’ve all stuck to that and looking at the boys in pre-season everyone’s looking fit and raring to go.
“I’ve been at clubs before – higher league clubs – and the professionalism isn’t as much. While everyone is pulling in the right direction there’s only going to be one goal. It’s really good to be a part of.”
With Weymouth shipping six goals against the Cherries, Goodship was reluctant to dismiss the result against his former side as symptomatic of friendlies, expressing his desire to win every game.
“I thought it was a good fitness workout, they’re a very good side. It was always going to be a tough opposition having played with a few of the boys before.
“I think we should read into the result a little bit. We want to win every game we play in. We intended to go out there and put in a good performance and get a good result.
“To say the result doesn’t matter, I’d like to think that every game we go into we want to win.”
